What does PS3 have to do with Xbox 360? MS can price the system at $500 since it will be the only next-gen console this year and even then Sony wont launch for another 4+ months...

But they are not competing with eachother at launch... Xbox 360 does NOT have to release at a low price... MS does not have to price to compete... they can price at thier own will till Sony launchs, then they can do a price drop...

The most advisable strategy would be to litter the market with consoles in order to have a bigger base (and more developers supporting it) before the PS3 is launched.
For this strategy to be effective, the launch price shouldn't be too high. Many people usually wait till a machine drops below the $249 line. What if, in the meantime, another machine is offered on the market, probably with an overall better hardware and with a good support of the industry ? I don't think it's a wise idea to launch a console with a price tag above the 300$
