i've used slackware to much success. but if you want to be one with the linux i'd go for something like linux from scratch.

and always refer to the man pages and tldp

I didn't try it yet but i like the ideea
make your own distro .This way started http://www.gentoo.org

Its because Red Hat got with the times and used GCC 3.1 over 2.96, which makes software run faster. Mozillia is slower in Linux than Windows because it doesn't use GCC 3.1 unless you compile the source with 3.1
