Unhappy Dell Precision M70 (Quadro FX Go 1400) random freezes, no Xid

Hi

I am experiencing random freezes using the Ubuntu Hoary + Xorg + the official nvidia 7174 drivers. This is not the "mouse moves, but everything else is frozen" bug. This is a freeze with the keyboard and mouse unresponsive. There are no Xids or errors of any kind that I can detect in the Xorg log file. I have tried everything---downgrading drivers, disabling AGP---and I still get the freezes. I can still ssh in to reboot the system, but killing X will not restore the frozen keyboard and screen. The crashes happen randomly, about once every week or so. It never happens while I am typing something---seems to usually be when I move the mouse. It seems to be restricted to using either firefox or vlc (video lan client), but that could just be because I use these applications often. RenderAccel is off.

I would gladly switch to the Xorg nv driver, but that one does not work at all with this system---when I try the nv driver, I always get the "mouse moving, everything else frozen" behavior on bootup. I do not *have* to have the nvidia driver, I just want any driver that will give me a stable system at full 1680x1050 resolution (vesa won't). If you have any hints for getting the nv driver to work, I would also love to hear those.

Specifications:
Dell Precision M70, 1GB DDR2 RAM
15" 1680x1050 WSXGA+ screen
Quadro FX Go1400, 256 MB
60 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Ubuntu Hoary 5.04, fresh install

Hi,

I also have a Precision M70, but have had no problems with 7174 -- Fedora Core 4 test 3 + updates, but I'm running a stock 2.6.12-rc4 kernel; X.org 6.8.2. The only problem I have is that the only way to suspend this machine in linux right now is through swsusp hibernation (ACPI S3 causes a hang on wake, suspend2 fails on resume), and the nvidia drivers don't support any kind of S4 (suspend-to-disk) power management. So, I have to kill X and restart each time, which sort of defeats the purpose. =/

Hi

If I can't get this fixed, I'll switch to Fedora. But I would really prefer to stay with Ubuntu, mainly because I like DEBs and everything else works flawlessly. Have you got wireless and sound working right as well under Fedora? If so, then a switch would be tempting. I'm just weary of RPM dependency hell, that's all... but maybe that's also improved since 2003.

Another possibility is to upgrade kernels. Right now Hoary is running kernel v 2.6.10, but I see 2.6.11 in the Debian repositories.

Do you think you could post your xorg.conf? Thanks!

Note: this is just my opinion, and is not intended to start a distro war, so if anyone would like to flame me, please don't. It won't do any good.

So far, I've had a positive experience with FC4 -- everything except suspend has worked out of the box (for sound, the snd-intel8x0 kernel module needs "ac97_quirk=inv_eapd" to fix playing sound through the speakers).

Suspend's a little tricky.. right now ACPI S3 suspend hangs on resume on this hardware (Intel ICH6 chipset); I've filed a bug with the ACPI folks, but who knows when they'll get a chance to look at it. swsusp works, but the nvidia driver doesn't support swsusp -- the display stays blank and the machine is locked up when switching back to X after a swsusp resume. suspend2 dies on resume. However, the stock FC4 kernel doesn't include swsusp support, so I've had to rebuild my own kernel. Once FC4 is released (a few weeks or so), I'm sure there will be people packaging custom kernels with swsusp, so this may remove the need to build a custom kernel.

As far as rpm dependancy hell goes, well, yum is there, and works well, albeit slowly. Once release happens, the apt repos will start cropping up, so you should be able to use apt for a much better experience. But there's little reason to install rpms by hand any more.

However, don't give up on Ubuntu yet -- I had some strange problems with Ubuntu on my last laptop that were fixed with FC3, but it could easily be a kernel config issue.

Just another input... I have an M70 with SUSE 9.3 and the SUSE drivers.. no problems. I didn't have any problems with my modified SUSE 9.2 with a modified (patched) 6629 and kernel 2.6.11.4 either. Under SUSE 9.3, even suspend to disk works... which is pretty amazing. There are some serious CD/DVD issues with SUSE 9.3, but all fixable. Eventually I'll post my M70 page on that.

Thanks for the input. Again, the only real difference I see here between both your setups and mine is the kernel version... so maybe I will try 2.6.11.

Again, I would love to see both of your xorg.conf files. Any chance you could post them?

Many regards

Very interesting -- by suspend to disk working, you mean you're able to suspend and then return back to X? Which kernel version are you using with 9.3, and mind posting your .config? I'm desperately trying to get some type of suspend working with X and the nvidia drivers

My xorg.conf is attached.

Some more info.. with 2.6.12-rc5-mm1, and with the patch from http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/5/3/54 applied, I'm able to enter S3 suspend-to-ram provided that:

1) I don't have the tg3 (ethernet) kernel module loaded -- the device seems to be very screwed when coming back from unsuspend (PCI config space is very messed up for it)

2) I don't have the nvidia module loaded With the nvidia module loaded, I see "Back to C", and then the screen turns off and the machine freezes, nothing out to serial console.

Without tg3 and without nvidia, I'm able to suspend/resume successfully.

I have not tried suspend to disk using the tg3 (though loaded, it's just that I'm on the wireless 2200BG)... BUT suspending to disk with the wireless has worked fine for me. Restores right back to where it was when booted.

Hmm, I just spent a while trying various combinations, couldn't get anything that worked with either 6629 or or 7174, using the SuSE 9.3 kernel (2.6.11.4-20a with the .config provided here), with either suspend-to-disk or suspend-to-RAM. The failure is pretty much exactly the same -- the system can suspend, but upon resume, as soon as it gets past "Back to C" (meaning that the initial ACPI wakeup routine is handing things back to the kernel), the LCD display goes off and the system wedges. Frustrating, to say the least.

You do realize that by default the screen will lock on resume from disk suspend... right? Maybe it's just waiting for you to move the mouse or something and type your password to unlock. Just thinking out loud... it all works for me.
