Default GeForce4 driver and FC4 Problem

I recently did a fresh install from FC4-test3 to FC4 and now I'm having problems running X Windows. Using my regular config, X just exits and looking at the verbose logs, the last entry is the one where the server tries to load the GLX extension. Once I comment out 'Load "glx"' in the Module Section of the configuration, X Windows starts.

Anybody else experience this? What kind of information do the devs need to help troubleshoot?

Oh, running on a Dell Intel P4 3GHz machine with a Quadro4FX chipset.

I've upgraded from FC3 and I am experiencing the same problem.

I have the same problem. Did a clean install of FC4 and I have a 6600GT. Worked great under FC3.

Thanks for the comment out the "glx" line at least now I can use my card with the nvidia driver

looks like a glibc versioning problem?

re add or uncomment the glx line to your xconfig and log into a text console (ctrl-alt-f1) as root and try:

init 3 ( sets the run level to text mode/turns off gdm )
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 startx ( all one line )

if a root graphical session does start (it did for me), open up a terminal and try running glxgears.

this will probably segfault but if you retry with

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 glxgears

it may work.

i am going by memory and not at the box in question, so forgive me if this isn't completely accurate.

unfortunately, i do not know how to pass this environment variable to the gdm startup, or if this is a "proper" workaround to use.

i am going to revert to the nv driver until i hear more.

I just put Fedora Core 4 on a machine with a FX5200. I grabbed the nvidia RPMS
from:

http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/4/i386/RPMS.lvn/

They are the 7174 ones though.

Give them a shot. YMMV.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. For now, I've just modified /etc/X11/prefdm so that gdm starts, at least:

Got to add it to one's ~/.xsessionrc too, I suppose.

Thanks for the tip!

This worked great for me. Until I ran updates for the new xorg-x11 packages (xorg-x11-6.8.2-37) then it stopped working. I replaced the updated rpms with the ones off the DVD, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

BTW you don't need to use "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 glxgears" once X is started glxgears seems to run fine.

Hello together,

I dont wanna open a new thread, so I just post my problems here:

- Fresh Fedora Core 4 Install - 32bit
- downloaded Nvidia Driver & installed them

Now I have Problem, that Xorg.0.log says:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

and if i want to run glxinfos I get:
[root@localhost ~]# glxinfo

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

NVIDIA Driver Versions, I tested 7667 & 7174

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

@mb2k: make sure you've edited your Xorg configuration file to reference the nvidia X driver, rather than the Xorg nv driver. The error message above indicates that X is currently using a different driver, likely nv.

Got the same problem. Did a fresh install of FC4, disabled selinux, installed 7664, edited xorg.conf to use "driver nvidia". When I init 5, the nVidia banner pops up, then it drops back to the text screen with an error. /var/log/Xorg.0.log has this:

(**) Option "dpms"
(**) NVIDIA(0): DPMS enabled
(II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX
(==) RandR enabled

Tried the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 trick, also no worky. I've commented out glx, and while it's using the nvidia driver, obviously no GL programs work.

Here's hoping there's a fix soon!
