Geforce4 Graphics Card Cannot Start (code 10)

Hi

Wondering if you can help. I am getting This Device Cannot Start (Code 10) for my graphics card (Geforce4 Mx 440, motherboard ASUS A7V600-X).
I first tried the last 3 version of the nvidia geforce unified drivers. No joy. I currently have the latest (71.89_win2kxp_english.exe) installed.

It’s definitely not a hardware fault with the card as I tested it in another machine. I cannot get any hardware acceleration at all.
Interestingly, dxdiag is telling me that the main video driver is vga.sys, however under device manager, driver details, the driver files listed are the nvidia ones (nvsvc32.exe etc). Under display properties, the adapter comes up as VgaSave – this seems to be the windows default for problem devices.
I noticed that the nvidia display driver service status is stopped despite being set to automatic, this may be part of the problem-? When I restart the service manually, it stops again with the following message:
“The NVIDIA Display Driver Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example the Performance Logs and Alerts service.”

In nvidia faq (see link below) they mention setting Assign IRQ to VGA to enabled. This option is not present within my bios:
