Default But what about movement?? Re: GeForce 7800 GTX antialiasing investigation

OK, so this is all well and good. Static images benefit greatly.

But what I'd like to know is do any of these modes improve a MOVING image, especially in an FPS title.

For example, the pixel "crawling" effects that are so obvious in some levels on Riddick? Mainly effecting the rendering on object edges. Its like the anti-aliasing effect causes a glistening or flow as you move your view.

The worst thing about Riddick is that your character slightly changes the camera position as he breathes, so unlike many titles, the image isn't even static when you stand still!

It was almost totally distracting and seriously affected the suspension of disbelief when I played it on my 6800 GT rig.

Any comments anyone??

Yes transparency AA benefits objects in motion. As a matter of fact. The difference is even more noticable in motion. Shimmering Leaves/Grass are no longer an issue for me in World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.

Thanks for the swift response Chris. You have just raised my interest in the 7800 considerably!

Anyone else with similar observations?

Hi,

I just built a system with a 7800GTX on an Asus A8N-SLI Premium with an AMD FX-53.

The shimmering leaves/grass while moving in CS:S is very noticeable (and annoying imo). Turning on super sampling and high quality helps, but it's still there.

Also, the overall performance in CS:S is very bad for some reason. Playing at 1024 x 768 with 4xaa and 4xaf with high settings my frames will drop to the 30's in some places with other players in view. My previous 6800GT never went anywhere near that low.

Driver issue maybe? Using 77.72.

So what about OpenGL games like DOOM 3? Any difference with the fences or anything else there?

I wasnet interested in the TPAA feature in the GF7 series until i experianced it in SC:CT.
yep i made some screenshot comparsions with the framerate there as well to compare the performance hit.
the screenshots compare no TPAA to supersampled TPAA. (4xAA used)

notice how in the second scene the TPAA was pretty much performance free while a considrable amount of the alpha texture jaggies of the steel on the hallway floor has gone!!

I use regular 4xAA in FarCry (no GC/TAA for now) as its still demanding @high res with all high-end/extra features enabled.
