Default No sound from nForce2 APU integrated audio

I've been battling sound issues (or lack thereof) on a fresh installation of PCLinuxOS for about a week now. The kernel I'm running is 2.6.11-oci12.mdk. Here's what the PCLinuxOS Control Center says about my sound card:

Identification
Vendor: ‎nVidia Corp.

Description: ‎nForce2 APU

Media class: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

Connection
Bus: ‎PCI

Bus PCI #: ‎0

PCI device #: ‎5

PCI function #: ‎0

Vendor ID: ‎4318

Device ID: ‎107

Sub vendor ID: ‎5385

Sub device ID: ‎36941

Driver
Module: ‎unknown

and:

Identification
Vendor: ‎nVidia Corp.

Description: ‎nForce2 Audio Codec Interface

Media class: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

Connection
Bus: ‎PCI

Bus PCI #: ‎0

PCI device #: ‎6

PCI function #: ‎0

Vendor ID: ‎4318

Device ID: ‎106

Sub vendor ID: ‎5385

Sub device ID: ‎36941

Driver
Module: ‎snd-intel8x0

Alternative drivers: ‎ali5455, i810_audio, nvaudio

Upon booting and logging in to the GUI, I get the message:

"Sound server informational message. Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory). The sound server will continue, using the null output device."

This occurs whether logging in as root or a normal user. I've installed the nVidia drivers and made all the appropriate tweaks to the config files (I believe) to no avail.

Here's my modprobe.conf:

[root@localhost etc]# more modprobe.conf
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ohci-hcd; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true
alias sound-slot-1 snd-intel8x0
alias net-pf-10 off
alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia
alias eth0 forcedeth
alias sound-slot-0 nvaudio
options snd-intel8x0 snd_ac97_clock=41194
remove unknown /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove unknown
install unknown /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install unknown

And finally, I've tried booting this machine off of Knoppix and the sound works fine!!! If I only knew how to transfer Knoppix sound settings to PCLinuxOS.

Any suggestions for fixing this would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks.

well, I think your sound-chip is recognized and the driver snd-intel8x0 is already loaded, but KDE's default sound server is probably a bit misconfigured. anyway:
1. start kcontrol (Kde's Control Center)
->Look for "Sound & Multimedia" ->3."Sound System" -> 4. Hardware tab -> 5. Change the Audio Device to "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" and press Apply...

if this doesn't work, please run lsmod and post the output...

OK. I changed the audio device to "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" as you instructed and now I get this message:

"Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory) The sound server will continue, using the null output device."

Here is the output of lsmod:

The nForce drivers for Linux are OSS, unfortunately. Instead of using ALSA, try OSS or Threaded OSS.

Delete this lines from your modprobe.conf file:
alias sound-slot-1 snd-intel8x0
options snd-intel8x0 snd_ac97_clock=41194

Those lines are from ALSA driver, i.e., the i8x0 sound card.

Bye!!!
