Thumbs up i never realized until now...

my fave OS has gotta be win98se

i dont kno what u guys have been doing to your win98se, but my system hardly crashed on me especially when i upgraded to my duron 650 from my pentium 166. i tweaked the hell out of it and i learned a lot of ins and outs and do's and dont's of this darn system that until now... being asked this question i cant help but say that win98se is it.

however i am not using it now... hehe
im using win2k and mandrake 8.1

but both of those systems r dual booted with win98se as an OS to fall back on because i feel i kno it so well to get me out of trouble if anything should happen. but i will admit that both win2k and linux has not crashed on my yet and seems highly stable

i have to mention my past favorites DOS and win31, i started really learning about pc's from these 2 systems first dos then win31 (i did play with other systems before tho but the others were not as user friendly for me at that time, i was barely learning about pc's)

DOS helped me the most because then i would have been pissed that i couldnt tweak the gui (win31) and later when i felt an urge to delve into unix. because of DOS, the unix command line and gui learning curve was actually so ridiculously easy and i realized how many thousands of times more powerful than DOS it was and still is

win31 was the first gui that i actually got into tweaking and made it easy to transition into win95 and winnt and later into win98se and win2k and also transition into macOS 7, 8 and 9 and later into macOS X and winXP

win98se i may never use it again unless linux or win2k crashes on me but it has a special place in my heart

<reminisce>oh all the games that i could play on it lol</reminisce>

bah I can't even hit 60fps in Max Payne at 1024x768 32bpp with AA and/or AF in 98SE. In XP I always get over 60 . I Benched XP to 98SE and XP always had the upperhand in every benchmark and game under the sun. Hence I stick with XP. My 3dmark in 98SE is around 4k. 98 hates 768mb ram.

yup, 9x OSes don't like large amounts of RAM and performance actually decreases with too much. that's actually very hilarious.

wonder what would happen if you tried to encode a dvd on a 9x system, would it commit suicide?

No, you'd reach the Fat32 max filesize limit and get a bluescreen

I chose XP - the stability of 2k with the game/multimedia compatibility of 9x (for the most part). Sure it may be bloated comparatively but that hasn't gotten in the way of anything I do. XP is a great OS that I've seen run perfectly fine on even 256 mb RAM.

You WILL notice a diference with an extra 256MB though.

xp is comfortable with 256

it runs tops with 512 or more , though

god i wish my mobo supported more than 512.

I want at least a gig.

I love having 512, it runs so much smoother than when I had 256. If I can ever afford it, I may get another 256.
