Default NVIDIA driver for Xorg is crashing

Hello Everyone,

Please help me; I have a 2.4GHz Celeron, GF4 MX440, driver 7664 (downloading 7667 now), Slackware 10.1, Linux 2.6.12 (compiled by me) and it crashes sometimes when viewing flash animations and have alot of applications running. And nearly everytime when i am doing something important.

It does not only crash when using the flash plugin, sometimes changing virtual desktop is enough.

dmesg reports this:
NVRM: Xid: 13, 0000 02005600 00001796 00000dfc 00000000 00000080
agpgart: Found an AGP 3.0 compliant device at 0000:00:00.0.
agpgart: Device is in legacy mode, falling back to 2.x
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 4x mode
is it a faulty card??
afaik this has only happened since upgrading to driver version 7664.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

The whole 7??? driver series doesn't fully support this card. The nvidia guys say they are working on a fix. What you can do now is:

* use driver 6629, which did crash when using the Composite extension but was otherwise usable; Unfortunately, this also means to use an older Linux kernel (2.6.11.*), because 6629 doesn't compile with 2.6.12. Or:

* use 7667, but turn off Composite and RenderAccel. This makes scrolling painfully slow, but works otherwise.

See also http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=51834. Switch to a different vendor if the next driver release doesn't fix the problem.

If you're experiencing instability including X crashes, please post an nvidia-bug-report.log for review, preferably generated just after X crashed (and before a reboot or restart).
