Default A couple of Q's

I'm using Mandrake 9.0 but these probably aren't distro specific anyway.

Where can you store command line aliases?

I'm having a bit of trouble getting my net connection to work.
I can dial ok but it gets to the end of the negotiation and disconnects with a message 'no carrier' what's going wrong?
I've tried both KPPP and the Gnome dialer with the same result.

A couple of thins I thought it could be are:
- Might I need to put in the DNS servers?
- Some sort of login scripting required?

thanks for your help, drayzen
