Unhappy slow opengl problem

Athlon-xp 1800+
Geforce2 mx 400 64 MB
Redhat 8.0
driver 1.0-4191

driver installation ok..
all libraries are correct.

I have performance problem I can not find out why.
A TNT linux system is faster than mine in glxgears.
My results 329 FPS. I seen others reported much quicker with g2 mx 400. My quake2 1024x768 only about 20 something FPS. I tried other opengl screensaver and are slow too.

What is the make/model of the mother board??

As it may have something to do with the mother board drivers not enabling the AGP stuff.

Once I know that, we can work on it from there

Sorry about all the questions but,

1. Have you updated to the latest RH8.0 kernel?

2. have you seen any error messages in 'dmesg' regarding the SIS chipset??

I've read that a few people had some problems with the SIS chipset, not sure which ones exactly, but it worth checking..

My board uses the AMD chipset, and it seems to be working ok.. So I can't really help you with the SIS chipset stuff.. Except to find out if there were any errors..

1. I use 2.4.18 kernel ( you really think is the kernel?)
2.4.19 is the lastest. But I am using XFS v1.1 only works with 2.4.18

2. I checked the dmesg. No errors.

unless there is some video diagnostic program. it is a bit hard to find the problem.

What happens when you ldd $(which glxgears)? Check the version of libGL.so that it's loading, and make sure that that version points at the nVidia version.

I know you said all libs are correct, but it is possible to miss one or two. That, coupled with the strange search path order of the dynamic linker, can cause problems.

Also check your X log to make sure that libglx.so is loading when the "glx" module gets loaded. If it says libglx.a, then that could be your problem -- libglx.a is the standard X glx, not the nVidia glx. Move it to either another directory or another filename (like XXXlibglx.a or something) and try restarting X.

That may be possible. Then I use the RPM's to install the driver and it renames any older drivers before it installs the new ones. So that usually takes care of older drivers or links.

I checked the links and the files. Nothing I found unusual. Anyway Nvidia's makefile automatically remove all Mesa files and install the right libraries and makes the right links.

the ldd of glxgears point to the right libraries.

Hmm... that's a stumper...

Any onboard video card which maybe not disabled properly??

(I have no idea where to find the specs for you board.. So I'm just guessing)

Else there may be a problem with the Video Card itself....

Well, the Makefile actually only removes known conflicting files, not all Mesa files. There might be a slight difference between the two.

However, if ldd gave you the right libs, then that's not it.

Did you check through the X log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)? Or was that what you meant by "and the files"?
