No I'm not. To any gamers running 64 bit; don't.

This could be an x86-64 specific problem. As somebody else mentioned, I'm not really *too* bothered about frames in 3D (I mean, within reason) but I want decent 2D performance. On Windows this is not a problem.

Also Prakash, thanks for the datapoint but I'm not sure whether I can use 6111 on x86-64/2.6.12. Your point is duly noted though, I'll try haggling somebody via linux-bugs@nvidia.

Anybody else using the AMD64/EM64T driver and noticing what I'm noticing? No more "benchmark pls" responses. If it's not evident, then you don't suffer the same problems I do.

Cheers.

I'm running a 6800GT AGP on a x86 P4 2.4Ghz HT. I'm using 7667 and I don't see the slow 2D performance others are stating. Here's some info that may be useful:

@wizdom

I am currently using 6111 with 2.6.13-rc3 (x86). But you need to patch/hack the driver and the kernel (in case of 2.6.13-rc*) to get it going. Take a look here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-333781.html (skip to my reply on page 2)

Hey
I'm running Fedora Core 4 x86_64 on an ASUS a8v Deluxe, driver v7667 and an ASUS N6600 GT, with no problem with 2D performance at all.

HTH,
Sven

Hi,

are only gtk apps slow?
Or all apps?

If only gtk-apps: gtk is known to be slow.
Maybe this is a case, where a slow gtk-function meets a slow nvidia-function for extrem overall slowness

If firefox is slow, what about opera/kde?
(glxgears is faster on kde than on blank metacity )

Please, gtk is not slow and glxgears is not a benchmark. Stop the FUD.

Some individual pixmap routines chosen by some individual toolkit or some individial applications might clash with some detail of the nvidia binary drivers.

As long as people are unwilling to directly point at something that splits out numbers there isn't much anyone can do.

I certainly don't see anthing slowish on my AMD64 with FC4/amd64, using a 32-bit Firefox.

it is not FUD

it is even recognized by the gtk-devs, that gtk is horribly slow.

Please use google, you might have a surprise.

I know, that glxgears is not a 'real' benchmark, still it is faster in qt-based windowmanagers, than gtk-ones.

Try for yourself.

It is FUD, you claim it is slow but cannot prove it. Which GTK developer says it is slow? Where does he say this? Also, since you admit glxgears is not a benchmark why do you point to that for toolkit comparisons? Let me know when Q3 runs faster under KDE will you?

a) Try setting your driver up like mine (with the options I posted).

b) Try loading two browsers, not just one Firefox (read my original message properly).

If you care to post a *comprehensive* method of benchmarking, not some useless program from 1996, I can do these benchmarks. Currently you've cited xbench which is decrepit software not fit to test what I believe the problem is.

I don't actually care. Mine is not slow.

I am just advising you that you won't get anywhere with the current approach.
