Can you post nvidia-bug-report.log? Also, what kind of motherboard are you using?

here ist the log.

my board is the ECS N2U400-A.

its nforce 2 based.

today, i had the same symptoms, twice.
however, the system was responsible, i was able to reboot the computer via ssh.

in the log there was:

Jul 30 22:54:40 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 25, L1 -> L0
Jul 30 22:54:40 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 8, Channel 00000002
Jul 30 22:54:40 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 25, L0 -> L0
Jul 30 22:54:40 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0002 0040 00000040 0010fe10 00000000 001b001e
Jul 30 22:55:07 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 8, Channel 00000020
Jul 30 22:56:07 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 25, L1 -> L0
Jul 30 22:56:07 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 8, Channel 00000020
Jul 30 22:56:48 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 25, L0 -> L0
Jul 30 22:56:48 linux1 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 8, Channel 00000020

may these problems be related to thermal problems?
(i checked the cards temp with nvidia-settings it was 60C. so it's pretty cool)

i replacd the stock cooler with an waterblock, that also covers ram and power converters

Hi,

have you played ut2004 before?
Maybe your card/CPU was overheating?

When did you clean your fans the last time?

SaTaN0rX,
I see you've turned on the "Coolbits" option. How are you using that option?

I don't see Xid 6,8 or 25 in the bug report you attached. In which log did you see those?

Thanks,
-Lonni

i have the coolbits option enabled, but i do not use it. i did use it with my old 5900xt, cause it had not
enough power to play doom3. i upgraded to an 6800gt, which has enough power, so there is no need
anymore to overclock. i overclocked this card one time, but i saw this doesn't give me more fps, so i did not do it again. however, i DID overclock my cpu (XP 2600+), by setting the fsb to 185 MHz. when this problem occured i reverted it to 166MHz,but the problem won't g away

Today it became even more evident: i was working with openoffice.org, and then this happened.
the computer was switched on by roughly 5 minutes then, cpu temp was 42C, so defintively no thermal problem. i rebooted 3 times, and the screen was garbled some seconds after X11 started,
in the time when gnome was loading. now i changed X11 to use the nv driver, and my machine works again.

here is the resent output of "grep Xid /var/log/syslog":

The Problem is very reproducable now . I'm afraid my card went to hell. to verify if its an hardware problem, or software, i'm gonna install Microsuck Windoof now. if there are still crashes i'll replace my card with the old fx 5900xt, to see if its the card or something else.

Thanx for your help, lonni

Now i installed windows. after installation of NVidia gfx driver the system crashes every boot. i think that card is defective ...

i will try to RMA it.

a note to energyman: yes, i was able to play ut2004 before. the card operated rock-solid for 4 weeks or so. then one crash, a few days later another, and yesterday two crashes. today it crashed short after boot.

i've to remark that the card still works in bios text mode, in the vesa framebuffer mode, with the opnesourced "nv" driver, or with windows 16 color Vga driver. it crashes instantly when using nvidia accelerated linux driver or the windows driver.

Hi,

well, RMA it. Tell the guy you get it from, that it does not work with the nvidia drivers. That is all he/she need to know

The nvidia driver would exercise hardware in a way that no other driver could. So if this is failing in both Windows & Linux with the nvidia driver, that sounds likely to be a hardware problem (especially if you're not truly taxing the card in either OS when it fails).

Update: i replaced the waterblock with the stock air cooler to RMA, tested it and ...
the card works again :rant

but the waterblock was affixed correctly, and there was thermal grease between ram, gpu,
voltage converters and the waterblock ...

also, the card runs at seriously higher temps now ... 81C nstead of 60C

could it be that the rams did not have enough contact with the waterblock ?

to what kind of failure are these Xids related? ram or gpu?
