Unhappy Blank screen with 6600 AGP

I have a bug report. I can't seem to make my 6600 AGP work. I have tried several options like removing all cards except my video card, changing power supplies, upgrading kernel (both latest distro specific kernel and vanilla kernel), disabling APIC and ACPI, disabling AGP (NvAGP=0), disabling renderaccel and render extension, forcing DFP to be used. I also tried different driver version (6629, 7167, 7174, and 7667).

The result seems to always a black screen. The machine does not completely lock-up. It is still accessible via SSH. I am attaching the nvidia-bug-report.log

Some additional Information:

Video Card: Inno3d 6600 AGP 256mb
Motherboard: MSI KT4AV (Via KT400 chipset w/ latest BIOS)
RAM: 512 MB DDR-400
OS: Kubuntu Hoary (5.04)
Display: DFP

----

BTW, I was able to make the video card work before in Fedora Core 2 using vanilla Linux 2.6.12 kernel using a certain .config (attached with this messsage). Using FC2's latest official kernel (ang those sligtly older) will cause the machine to lock-up. Everything was working until I migrated from FC2 to Kubuntu. I also tried to compile and use the vanilla Linux 2.6.12 kernel on Kubuntu (modified Ubuntu .config and the .config file I used in FC2) but I can't make it to work (black screen). The only thing I haven't tried yet is replacing the motherboard. The video card seems to work fine on Windows 2000 while runnung Doom 3 and 3dmark (as long as AGP is set to 4x only).

I just replaced my motherboard. The new motherboard is now an Epox 8rda+ Pro (nForce2 based). Everything now works fine on Win2k, even when I set AGP to 8x. I was hoping that everything will be fine on Linux as well if I replace my motherboard but I still get a black screen when I start X.org. Anyway, here's my new nvidia-bug-report.log.txt.

BTW, I tried waiting longer just to see what happens. The keyboard stops responding but I could still log-in via SSH. Anyway, what happens is that the screen becomes white, has many black vertical lines, and what's displayed on the screen blinks. I think the system is attempting to go back to text mode after the X server process dies and just displays blinking white-colored 0xB2 ASCII character on the whole screen. Anyway, I took a photo of it using a phone camera.

I'm having the same issue with the 6600. The system doesn't lock but the screen just goes black. The X log doesn't show anything suspicious. If I alt-F1-6 to another terminal and then back, the term I launched startx from is back to a terminal. Any solutions to this?

thanks

Not sure if this will be of any help, but...

Looking at the error log you generated, it appears that your tv tuner card is sharing an irq with your video card, AND there are some weird usb errors farther down. Have you tried it without your tuner card in?

Well, it's probably not the tv tuner card. If you read my original post, I've tried removing all cards except the video card. I tried it on both motherboards. It didn't help. The USB errors were produced by my Palm because during the time I use nvidia-bug-report.sh, I was charging my Palm. It produced that USB error because my Palm was turned-on initially and then I turned it off. Anyway, I still get the blank screen even if I don't have any USB device attached.

Oh, and BTW, my old Inno3d GeForce4-MX 440 works flawlessly on both my old and new motherboard. It's just when I replace my GeForce4-MX with the 6600 that I experience the problem.

The only other thing I can think of is flashing your card with a new bios, from a different manufacturer even. You'll want to check out mvktech.net for that. It's a fairly safe procedure, and even in the event you break video, you can usually recover.

What other manufacturer's BIOS would you recommend using on a Inno3d 6600 AGP?

Hmm... I just had a look at mvktech.net. Unfortunately, I don't see any 6600 AGP w/ 256mb RAM. Or is it OK to use the ones with 128mb only?

What about checking power management settings in the kernel ie untoggling the ACPI settings for video etc? I've heard the nvidia module does some of it's power management. I have a similar problem that has just cropped up with a 6200 card, and the only thing I've done recently is recompile the kernel to add support for a gigabit network card.

Isn't it that "acpi=off" kernel parameter is supposed to take care of untoggling the video card's power management?

I just noticed this:

Quote:
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU detected as: GeForce Go 6600 GT
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 05.43.02.61.00

Could this be the culprit? My card not being detected correctly?
