Default Brief interface/mouse stalls when opening or closing images/pdfs

Since installing Jaunty (64bit, fresh install) a few months ago, I am frequently experiencing brief interface freezes when I open various types of files or when I close them. These freezes are most noticable when rendering large PDF files in evince, or opening pictures with the image viewer. Each freeze generally lasts for about ~1-3-seconds, during which I can't move the mouse. The interruptions tend to get longer as I have more windows open and longer freezes will also interrupt sound.

I've tried to narrow down the problem by disabling compiz, but this has no effect. I've also tried installing the latest mainline kernel and several different versions of the Nvidia driver (180.x, 185.x and the 190.x betas). Unfortunately, none of this seems to make any difference. There are no messages in any of the system logs that indicate errors. I've attached the nvidia bug report. Any input on this problem would be greatly appreciated!
