Come on nVidia... I've been an avid supporter for years. This bug has not even come close to being fixed... I'm a software developer. I know it wouldn't be difficult to fix this bug!

I came back to my lab after three months away, and I was excited to think that the primary display bug MUST be fixed by now. No dice, it seems.

I have this nice swanky CRT ready to act as my second display the moment this is fixed. Come on, nVidia, you can do it!

I too greatly desire this option. It is making my everyday use troublesome. Hell, it is the reason I registered here.

So, is this fixed with 8774 drivers?

Just tried and I am afraid not. I have two LCD monitors, one using the VGA connector, and the other one a DVI.
This is my section Device:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "device1"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "DPMS"
    Option "TwinView" "True"
Option "MetaModes" "DFP: 1280x1024, CRT: 1280x1024"
    Option "TwinViewOrientation" "CRT-0 RightOf DFP-0"
    Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP-0, CRT-0"
    Option "RandRRotation" "True"
EndSection
And still screen 1 is invariably the CRT (VGA) LCD. Or am I missing something?

Nope, that's the (unfortunately) expected behaviour.

I'm quite disappointed in Nvidia on this. It surely is a fairly trivial fix, since the Windows drivers have been able to do this for as long as I can remember.

<insert standard "drivers should be open source" rant here>

Hey, I've been following this thread for several months, and I just thought I'd just say that this also affects me.
I have, however worked around the problem by plugging my TFT monitor into the VGA port on the card, and using a VGA-to-DVI adapter to plug my CRT into the DVI port. This does mean that my TFT is using a VGA cable, and gets detected as a CRT by the driver, but I can't see any difference in picture quality, and it's a small price to pay for a primary TFT monitor. However, this is a less than perfect situation, and I eagerly await a fix from Nvidia.

Thumbs down Re: first display on twinview

*bump*

Well, I have just the same problem. Cannot make my DFP monitor become Primary screen no matter what I set "UseDisplayDevice" to, it wont make my DFP as monitor0 a.k.a primary.

"UseDisplayDevice" is usable, if you use one monitor only, to force either CRT or DFP as primary output.

But having both CRT and DFP seems to be as before, making CRT ALWAYS Primary, no matter what you set UseDisplayDevice to.

I tried following:
UseDisplayDevice "DFP"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-0"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-1"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP, CRT"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-0, CRT-0"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-0, CRT-1"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-1, CRT-1"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-1, CRT-0"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-0, CRT"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP-1, CRT"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP, CRT-0"
UseDisplayDevice "DFP, CRT-1"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-0"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-1"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT, DFP"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-0, DFP-0"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-0, DFP-1"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-1, DFP-1"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-1, DFP-0"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-0, DFP"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT-1, DFP"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT, DFP-0"
UseDisplayDevice "CRT, DFP-1"

Nothing works to make DFP as primary and CRT as secondary

Is this really so hard to fix, or have you put this thread on official "ignore" ?

"Drivers should be open source" I agree!

You can add me to the list of people who want this fixed. I've recently installed Ubuntu and have a DFP as my main monitor and a analogue flat panel (smaller resolution) as my second screen, and cannot have the DFP as my primary monitor using Twinview. Xinerama performance was very poor when I tried it so I want to use Twinview (much better performance), but this bug is really annoying. Looks like I'll have to use just one monitor in Ubuntu until this is fixed

Please fix this!

I didn't notice much difference. Ok, I'm not playing any intensive 3D games, but XGL/Compiz for example runs smooth with Xinerama. I'm still using Xinerama and leaving TwinView off so I can force my DFP to primary.

When I tried it scrolling my bookmarks in Firefox was much slower compared to using twinview (that was using the nvidia driver, not the open source nv one). The favicons took a little while to appear when scrolling, but they came up instantly with twinview. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Edit: It seems the nv driver doesn't work with multiple monitors on a card anyway. I've tried it with Xinerama again though and performance is really bad just doing simple things in firefox like opening or closing a tab.
