Default GeForce4 MX 420 S-Video Widescreen TV out??

I have a new Gentoo system on my Dell 8250 with a GeForce4 MX 420. I'd like to get widescreen output to my Hitachi 51F500 RP CRT TV via the s-video output.

Is it even possible to get any widescreen mode out of that thing? I've tried several modelines generated with gtf using both the 6629 and 7667 drivers and always get 'not a valid TV mode' in the log.

Does Nvidia have anything that explains what cards are even capable of this? I can't seem to find anything. I could be wasting hours trying to do something that's not even possible. From searching this forum it seems I'm not alone.

Thanks in advance.

For widescreen support both a special modeline and the ability to create a special widescreen signal would be needed. The widescreen signal part would be needed for the tv to know that you are sending a real 16:9 signal.

The generation of a widescreen signal is not supported on the (builtin) tvout implementation used on Geforce4mx and higher cards. Previous cards used an external tvout chipset from brooktree/conexant/philips/.. and some of those supported generation of the widescreen signal but these days none of the chips support it as far as I know.

Thanks for the reply! At least now I know not to spend any more time on it.

There is one option you can do to tell mplayer & mythtv that it is running wide aspect ratio.
Set your tvout to 720x480, then put this in your xorg.conf file

Section "Monitor"
DisplaySize 160 90

this tells X the physical size of your screen. Mplayer & Mythtv will calculate their aspect ratio from this.
You can then use your TVs manual zoom mode to stretch the screen to full width.
