Best AGP nvidia card you can buy is a 6800 Ultra. But it will cost you $350-$425, depending on where you shop.
Best AGP ATI card is a x850XT PE, which is about to get a price cut actually. The guy at best buy is an idiot, the 5500 256MB would lag during pong.... If your into features, go with nvidia. If you want raw performance, go with ATI. Nvidia's g6 series has hdr, sli compatiblity and great opengl support. Ati's x800 series has the fastest driect3d performance, but not so great opengl performance. It lacks full precision hdr...(which always ends up in a debate so just say it doesnt have hdr) but will be crossfire compatible. (Ati's answer to sli) Personally, I say go with a AGP 6800 GT. You can find them for about $250 and it's a great card.

If you can afford 6800GT, go with that, TigerDirect I know for sure has a 250 dollar GT If you can't afford 6800GT, then go with the 6800 normal. It's only 160 on NewEgg, which is looking mighty attractive even to me... K |

I would go 6800GT too, save yourself some $. You can always clock your GT to ultra speeds

If your budget is around $150, the vanilla 6800's will soon be falling to the $150 range. AGP 6800's are awesome cards, since a lot of them have unlockable pipelines. If you want to go ATi, $150 should get you an X800 vanilla after the price cuts (or at least an X800GT).

i have a 6600 256 mb by PNY for $180, its great card, you should look into the 6 series. try to get 256mb. on newegg and tigerdirect, you could probably get the PNY GeForce 6600 256mb i just bought in the low 100's. i hear the 6600GT has overheating problems. make sure you think hard on your choice
