Unhappy Linux problems after installing an Nvidia video card - I'm completely stuck!

Hi. I have Linux Ubuntu - I first installed it about a week ago, while I was
having no video card (only the integrated one). Now I bought an NVidia
GEForce6600GT - the Windows instal went without a hitch, as it should.
However, now I can't reboot in Ubuntu because the driver is missing, I
suppose - the graphic layer is not starting, and after I login I am
presented with a prompt.

Although I'm a pretty good windows programmer, I am an absolute beginner in
Linux, so I have no idea on what to do next - I restarted in Win and on the
NVidia site I can find the following drivers for my card: Linux IA32, Linux
AMD64/EM64T, and Linux IA64 - I'm sure that I need the IA32 driver,
since I have a Pentium IV at 3Ghz. But still, once I download it, how would
I install it ? Not to mention that I should put it, I suppose, in the
"transfer" area that Linux created on my D Drive when installing, because
otherwise I could not access the driver if I save it in a NTFS partition,
and I don't know how to pick the driver up from that transfer partition
while in the prompt mode, and how I can install it. Note that I also cannot
download the driver while in Linux, because I don't know how
to start Mozilla from the prompt, either (if that's feasible at all, which I
think is not).

Help me out, please - I have no clue on what to do next.

Thanks a lot.
Alex

1)In console mode , you can use "links"

# links http://www.nvidia.com

navigate to where you want to go and download. You don't need GUI for links

2) Or, Download the drivers into windows and burn a CD.

3) Or, if you have another machine , setup an ftp server

Anyway once you get the driver, then all you have to do is

# sh whatever_you_downloaded

and follow the instructions.. Just say yes to every question.

reboot.

the first thing to do, if you're more confortabgle with a gui, is setting it up.

You might want to use the free nv driver that works well with 2 graphics, then in the gui, you could easyly check for installing the nvidia proprietary driver.

to do that, check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (open it with emacs for example...) and look for the section "Device". In that section remplace or put the line Driver "nv". Then try to restart X ("/etc/init.d/gdm restart", or whatever connection manager you use)

All of that should be done as root.

You could also use the automatic X configuration tool :
first, save your previous configuration file : "$cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/" (for example)
then as root run "xorgconfig" and follow the instructions.

Good luck
