Default X/PC hang by starting xawtv, vncviewer

Hi,

i am using debian linux (testing)

Hardware:
VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C693A/694x [Apollo PRO133x]
GeForce4 MX 440
bt848 tv card

Software:
kernel 2.4.22
gcc 3.3.6 (Debian 1:3.3.6-7)
XFree86 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 20050601051219 fabbione@fabbione.net)

i tried several nvidia drivers with different prolems:
version 5336:
- vncviewer, vmware freezes X after some time
-> remote login possible, "killall -9 X" restarts the xserver
-> after that the text console shows only "acsi art", but X works again
- no problems using xawtv (bttv, v4l)

version 6629:
- xawtv freezes the Computer after a short time (no remote login possible)

version 7676:
- xawtv freezes the Computer immediately (no remote login possible)

The problems are reproduceable.
All drivers and kernel are compiled with gcc 3.3.6 (see above).

what ist the problem here?
before i used the gforce4 MX i had a gforce 256 ddr - no problems with this card and version 5336 ...

Hardware Problem? Driver Problem?

THX for help,
sebastian.

Your /var/log/messages is full of entries like these:
Aug 24 13:28:39 wurm kernel: NVRM: bad caching on address 0xc2eeb000: actual 0x163 != expected 0x173

The problem is called cache aliasing and can occur when multiple mappings to a certain memory page exist. To fix the problem you need to upgrade your kernel as it is a kernel bug. Not sure if the latest 2.4x kernel fixes the issue, if it doesn't you must upgrade to 2.6.11 or newer.

- xawtv freezes the Computer immediately (no remote login possible)

i attached the new nvidia-bug-report_2431.log.txt

thx,
sebastian.

You may want to enable the debugging stuff for the bttv driver and see if that gets you any additional info.

options bttv bttv_verbose=2 bttv_debug=1 irq_debug=1
