Default soundcard not detected by alsaconf amd64

I've been trying all day to get the sound up and running, but no dice. I have the chaintech vnf4 ultra which has onboard nvidia sound. I have the snd-intel8x0 driver module and modprobe gives no error. I tried commenting out the oss modules but I'm not to sure that I did a thorough job(im a newb) Here's my lsmod output:

debian:~# lsmod

As you can see there's still oss modules loaded(told you im a newb). I'm not sure is thats significant but i'm sure that I don't know what else to try. Its a Debian 64bit distro running 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 kernel and I believe that the alsa drivers are on by default. any help would be appreciated.

I have Debian GNU/Linux amd64 unstable/sid and before I finished setting everything up, alsa used my integrated audio-chip (part of nForce 4 Ultra) with snd_intel8x0 as a primary device just fine.

What does the following command print out for you?
Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards
You should get something like
Code:
1 [CK804 ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK804
                     NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xc5103000, irq 66

Hmm. What about "dmesg | grep intel"?

(I'm just trying to sound like I had a clue.)

Is there anything else interesting looking in kernel log (/var/log/kern.log)?

And just to make sure: running alsaconf as root returns something like "no soundcards found"?
