Question Yes ... Another FATAL error!

As you will read below, the errors I am getting simply do not match up with what I see when I 'ls' the folders that claim the file IS NOT in. So someone please tell me how in the heck I supposed to utilize this highend GeForceFX Card under Linux using the latest drivers under the latest Kernel.

Attached are my log files as requested.

It's not saying the file doesn't exist, it's saying "No such device". If you take a look at dmesg, you should be able to get an idea of what goes wrong, probably you haven't compiled it against the proper kernel sources. Read the docs my friend...

The main problem at the moment is that you tried to load the driver 'nv' from your X config file but you need to load 'nvidia.

Please unload the nvidiafb kernel module, it conflicts with the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver.

Yeah because that is the only driver that will load.
Otherwise I get the errors I pasted in my original post.

No. I compiled it against the correct sources. I have 2 kernel sources ... one is 2.4.31 and the other is my custom 2.6.12.4.

Considering that kernel 2.4 doesn't even use the .ko formatted modules ... take a guess at which sources I used to compile this module?

Read the docs? Come on .. Why don't you read my post, before replying.

Finally, a sensible answer.
I will try this and report back when I have some results.

THANKYOU zander.
Unloading the nvidiafb module ... worked!!
I now see that purdy NVIDIA splash when I startx ...

I knew it was something simple ..... I just couldn't put my finger in it.
Having been an avid and longtime nvidia user under linux, this one was so simple I completely missed it.

Thanks again zander.

No problem. FWIW, future versions of the NVIDIA installer will detect the nvidiafb driver and alert users to the problem you encountered.

@zander

this is a very good idea - a lot of people use some fb-driver or the other and had problems because of this... it became almost faq

This should eleminate alsmost 10-20% of all nvidia probs in the different forums/mailing lists
