WIth the stock cooler is was 59 degrees while idle...
Now that I've put on the NV Silencer Rev 3, its 71 degrees while idle... Havent tried a game yet... But I'm almost positive i installed it right... memory and nvidia chip is covered by the thermal paste, the fan is on, the back heatsink is on... I dunno.. this isn't right tho... was hoping for 10 degrees lower not higher... The only thing i can think of is the plug... has a Y cable, with like a 4 pin or 3 ping plug... the one with 3 pins went into my 6800gt... the other part is doing nothing... I'm assuming its because different 6800gt's use different kinds correct? or is that suppose to be plugged in too? EDIT: in the 80's while in game... temp was in the 70's -stock. I notice when i leave game, the temperature shoots down a lot faster... but its shooting back down to a higher temperature. ERRR |

Make sure that the heatsink makes contact with the GPU core.

Order yourself some arctic silver and remove the Silencer. Clean the GPU with 90% rubbing alcohol. Put a pinky-fingernail size dab of Arctic Silver on the GPU. Clean the Silencer with the 90% rubbing alcohol (where the contact with GPU was made) and put Silencer back on card. That will probably solve your problem and lower your temp significantly.
I know you feel like you covered all your bases, but do it all over again. I have found that when I am having troubles like that, I can usually go back and find something that just wasn't right. Also, did you install the ventilated card slot cover (where the hot air is blown through)? I put a rev.2 on my wifes 6800GT and she MIGHT hit 71 degrees under load at 430/1100 - and her case cooling kinda sux....

ok.. i took off the wrong card slot cover... took off the card slots 2 below, instead of slot, 1 below... its now idle at 60 degrees (70's in game)... thats ABOUT the same as before NV Silencer... prolly not what i wanted from my $35
Whats the arctic silver do exactly? |

The arctic silver is a thermal paste. It transfers heat alot better than the thermal pad/paste that comes on the silencer.

i'll pick some up tomorrow at compusa...
any idea what kind of temperature difference... I'd imagine 3 or 4 degrees... See i bought the NV Silencer hoping to get the temp lower so i can OC my 6800... but... the temp didnt go down... so i dont plan on overclocking... and if the thermal paste will only make it go down a few then... theres prolly little point in it... but lets say i do anyway... should i put the paste over the memory and gpu core? and so... clean the current paste off... then put on the arctic silver on... then clean it off ??? |

Most people overdo the thermal paste...
Its not goop that is meant to ooze out after you interface the surfaces, it's meant to make contact between the two. The thermal paste interfaces the chip to the heatsink. More is merely a waste. Gentle |

Gentle is right. I didn't put any paste on the RAM, just the GPU. I left the included thermal pads on the ram. I checked my wifes temps on her 6800GT earlier, and the core was at 53 degrees with an ambient of 38. During 3D, it would only hit 71-72 at a clock of 430/1100.
The process of putting on the paste is as folows: 1. Clean off the existing paste from the GPU AND Silencer. 2. Apply the new Arctic Silver paste to ONLY the GPU. 3. Reassemble the Silencer to the card. Remember, just a dab. Hopefully, that should make everything better. ![]()

well.. i overclocked her just to see what temps i'd get...
@ 429/1.15... the temp is about 62/77 compared to 60/72 not OC... So, I'll get some arctic silver tomorrow.. maybe i can knock it down a bit. |
