whats with pricing on these??!?!

Why are some 512mb 6800 Ultras going for like 600$ and up on newegg, but you can get a 7800 GTX for like 500 $or sometimes less. a 6800 ultra 512 won't beat a gtx, why would be priced more?

Thats why you haven't seen any 512mb 7800GTX, because they would be like $800-900 USD.

Anyone compare 512mb to 256mb cards out there? I would like to see direct comparisons on the 6800 512mb vs the 256mb card...

Expecially in games like Doom3 and BF2 where all texture memory in a 256mb card is used.

Well, the extra memory wasn’t intended to give better performance…if there is nothing to fill up the extra space, it’s just going to go unused. If they took the 256MB RAM and bumped it from 1.1GHz to like 1.6GHz, then I would definitely think there would be a huge performance boost.

The 512MB is so that you can run game in higher quality modes. Higher quality usually = worse performance.

They have no choice but to sell it that high since the RAM itself is expensive whether or not it gives a performance improvement. But I bet it helps a lot with stuttering in BF2 and F.E.A.R.

2gigs of ram fixes that issue 100%... and 2gigs of ram is cheaper

But its a bad way to fix the problem. When the graphics card runs out of video memory it begins to take memory from the system which causes a framerate hit. That is why I'm waiting for the next gen 512mb cards.

I believe EVGA has 512mb 6800GTs for $400. That is a much better deal than $600 for a 512mb Ultra.

maybe they are aimed at ppl who want a cheaper workstation that still has all the graphics power? i mean, these cards arent always aimed at the enthusiast.

I thought that was the case with my studdering in fear, but I added another gig of ram (now at 2gigs) and it completely fixed any studdering problems. I'd be curious to see an fps comparison in F.E.A.R of a 512 ultra verses the gtx
