Unhappy Cannot install NVidia driver on X86_64

Hello!

I cannot install the NIDIA-Linux-x86_641.0-7676-pkg2.run.txt driver on my Suse 9.1 system. (Nor can I install the previously running *7174* driver).

The installation mechanism proceeds normally, asking if I want to recompile the kernel interface module but, at the end, the result is failure.

The weird thing is that it appears to complain that a script is not there which does appear to be there.

I also found and applied a patch which was recommended (*1.0-7676-1359015*) but get the same results.

I've been stymied for about a week now and would greatly appreciate any help that I might be able to get on this as my Linux system is now, essentially, unusable.

All the best!

Paul

I should have mentionned in my earlier post that my Linux kernel version is 2.6.5-7.193-default.

All the best!

Please post the driver installation log from /var/log.

Thanks,

I'm sorry. I thought I had included it as an attachment. I guess it didn't make it into the post for some reason.

I now realize it was because it had a .log extension. I've renamed it as .log.txt and I think it's gone now. Please let me know if it hasn't shown up.

All the best!

Paul

Do you have a full kernel-devel (or what-ever SUSE calls it) RPM?
AFAICS it's missing.

The following kernel packages are installed:

kernel-default-2.6.5-7.201
kernel-docs-2.6.5-7.201
kernel-source-2.6.5-7.201

Please note that installing the NVidia drivers always used to work. It's just that all of a sudden, the driver wasn't working one day and, when I went to reinstall it, I started having the problems I've described in my earlier posts.

All the best!

Baah! I'm guessing here... but it should work.
Do:
cd /usr/src
ln -sf linux-$(uname -r) linux
cd linux
make cloneconfig

If all goes well, try building the nvidia driver again.

Speaking of which, if you see kernel-ksys or something like it, install it.
Only God knows, why the deranged monkeys @SUSE decided to screw up the kernel-devel RPMs structure so badly...

Cheers,

Thanks for your suggestions. However...

I went through the 'make cloneconfig' procedure you suggested. It spewed out about a zillion lines of stuff that went by way too fast to read but I didn't see any error messages.

I didn't see the anything related to kernel-ksys (by the way, where would I look?).

I then tried to rerun the nvidia-installer. It still complained that it couldn't complete the installation. This time, however, the log looks different (please see attached). However, I'm still not sure what to make of it.

All suggestions gratefully welcomed!

OK.
Actually this time the installation managed to finish a couple of steps.
Try the following:
cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make bzImage
make modules

Now try again.

Thanks for all your help.

That did it.

To summarize for others who may follow in my unfortunate footsteps:

cd /usr/src
ln -sf linux-$(uname -r) linux
cd linux
make cloneconfig
make bzImage
make modules

Then, reinstall the driver and rerun sax2.

All the best!

Happy to help.
Someone should contact SUSE and ask them to pre-configure (and build) their kernel source...

Cheers,
