Default driver >= 7664 (including 7676) + composite + multihead = Xorg crash

System:
Suse 9.2 using xorg-x11-6.8.1-15 with nvidia geforcefx5900 device.

I wanted to use the x11 composite extension with the new kde 3.4 since the effects have gotten alot better. I had this working with my old 7167 driver but the option "allowcompositewithglx" or whatever didn't exist yet so I couldn't run this with hardware accelerated openGL aps. I upgraded the driver thinking this would fix the problem only to find now that whenever I turn on the composite extension, X crashes right on start with signal 11 (no undefined symbols listed either) shortly after the nvidia logo appears. This doesn't happen when I disable the second monitor but I need my second monitor more than I need the composite eye candy. This is a rare case so I'm just assuming that nvidia hasn't came across it yet.

If you've disabled the Composite extension are you able to run with multiple display devices?

Also, can you post an nvidia-bug-report.log?

Thanks,
Lonni

Yes that's correct, I usually run with multiple monitors both from my geforce card, one coming from the crt plug, the other using the dvi-to-crt adapter. When I turn compositing on with the newest driver though, X crashes with the multihead setup.

How do I get the nvidia-bug-report.log file?

Run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root.

This file contains just a kernel log dump that is for today where this error happened yesterday sometime. So I don't know if it is going to show up on there. but here it is.

The pertenant kernel msg to the error that I got I remember anyway:
Sep 12 18:13:44 darkbox kdm: :0[8677]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Sep 12 18:13:44 darkbox kdm[8671]: Display :0 cannot be opened
Sep 12 18:13:44 darkbox kdm[8671]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

And in the kdm.log, there was a report of the server going down due to signal 11.

The file is attached but due to limits on the type of file and size I can upload, I had to name suffix it ".txt" when it should be ".txt.gz". So rename it to nvidia-report.txt.gz, un-gzip it and then you should have it.

THe bug report that you attached doesn't include a kernel dump, and also doesn't appear to include the crash that you've mentioned.

Also, have you tried using TwinView, or do you explicit want to separate X screens?

And finally, is the behavior any different with 1.0-7676 ?

Thanks,
Lonni

Yea there was no kernel fault, just an X server crash. The behavior still occurs with the latest driver though I reverted to 7664 and realized it must have started back then since the driver before then never had a problem (though the AllowGLXWithComposite) option wasn't present then either. I haven't messed with it (thus experienced the crash) since yesterday and I generated the bug report today, so the crash that I'm talking about is out of the kernel ringbuffer. What I pasted came from a grep through /var/log/messages for yesterday's messages.

mlfarrell,
Next time this happens, please generate and post a bug report that captures the event.

Also, is TwinView an option for you?

Thanks,
Lonni

No, twinview is off. Here's my x11 config:

Also note that below, although I set up a "television" monitor,
I don't actually use my tv as a monitor anymore so I don't refrence that section anymore.

Ok I fixed it! The AllowGLXWithComposite option had to be specified inside both "device" sections. Either that or the server not crashing this time on start was a fluke.
