Default Weirdness upgrading to 7676 with GeForce 3 + TV Out + Clock Range

I just spent a few hours trying to figure this out, so this is a post for posterity with a work-around...

My MythTV box runs Gentoo with a GeForce 3 doing the TV-out. Until recently, I was using the 6629 drivers for nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx, and everything worked great.

Well, my crufty hard drive had a melt down. Feh. So I bought a new one and set about reinstalling the latest Gentoo stuff which at the time of this post includes version 7676 of the nvidia drivers.

Same xorg.conf file, same everything, and "uh oh"... starting X produces only a black screen on the TV. Xorg.0.log reports no errors... X windows thinks that it is running happily.

Lucky for me, I had some backups of the old HD.... in particular I found an old Xorg.0.log from when my configuration worked and did a visual diff.

The two log files were almost completely identical in every substantive way (ofc, memory addresses and various versions differed, but that's expected). Except for one. Where the old (6629) log reported:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 350.00 MHz

the new one said:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 650.00 MHz

... what the?

Keep in mind, this is with the exact same xorg.conf file.
So I unmerged 7676, reinstalled the older 6629, and now everything works great again. I don't know if this problem is particular to GeForce3 or to other newer versions of the driver, but maybe my hours of struggle will save someone else some time
