Default KDE freezes on splash screen

Hi there,

I have the following problem: I just compiled a Kernel 2.6.12 Kernel and a new nvidia kernel module from the 7676 driver. The compile went fine. X starts up. However, if I try to log in to KDE the computer freezes on the splash screen.

I am using KDE 3.4, debian unstable and the original nvidia-driver, not the .deb packages. My computer is a Toshiba laptop with a gforce graphic card.

Any hints?

Is your entire laptop freezing, or just X/KDE? Do you have a means of telnet/sshing into it when the freeze occurs, or setting up a serial console?

Also, please provide an nvidia-bug-report.log for review.

Thanks,
Lonni

I'm just curious... Have you had any progress in identifying the underlying problem with the kde splash all freezing up?

joffe,
I'm not sure who your question was directed towards, however without a bug report and a means of reproducing this, I'm afraid that its unlikely that there will be any progress investigating this issue.

If you're also experiencing this problem, please provide the same information that I requested from hanno.

Thanks,
Lonni

My computer does that on the KDE splash and is 100% reproducable if RenderAccel is enabled. Turn it off, it won't happen.

Edit your x11/xorg config file, look for RenderAccel, turn it off.

Check your APIC settings in BIOS... If they are DISABLED in BIOS the make sure you pass the noapic parameter to ther kernel at boot.... I also had a problem with KDE locking up on start until I updated my BIOS and fussed with APIC.

Hi there,
Is there any particular linux distribution that you prefer to have the crash log from? I can arrange logs from a couple. I am dead serious here -- if there is anything I can do to help these crashes go away I will go the extra mile. I think I can give you examples from Ubuntu, Slackware and Fedora tomorrow. **will download fedora tonite**
Thanks in advance

Actually, I believe that we've reproduced this, and it should be resolved in the next driver release (1.0-8xxx).

Thanks,
Lonni

I just want to be sure that we are on the same wavelength here. Can you please elaborate on what "this" is that you have reproduced. Are you talking about
Code:
"KDE freezes on splash screen"
when running
Code:
driver 1.0-7xxx
on a
Code:
GeForce4 420 Go 32MB (or similar)
and at the same time having
Code:
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
in your xorg.conf.

If so -- this is wonderful news to me and all other KDE users who have waited (im)patiently for a driver release of this magnitude to take place. Keep up the good work

Just as an FYI, I'm seeing the same thing on a 7800 GTX running debian-based ubuntu with kernel 2.6.11.

ok.. sorry to bug you with that question. But I really have to ask as it is important for me since I have to set up more than 20 computers for a lab at the university. Is the bug with the random freezes (high cpu usage and Xid errors) tracked down? I really need those computers to not freeze randomly.. (I got that prob with my own pc and linux, windows is fine, but another pc a set up is fine).

thanx
