Default Font/Window Size issue

I'm not entirely sure if this is a problem with X or with my video card... I remember having issues similar to this in the past that were reported to be video card specific, though, and have spent the last few weeks trying to find an answer to this with no avail.
I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu (Hoary) on a computer with an XFX GeForce 5600FX. My problem is as follows:

My monitor is set to run at a resolution of 1600x1200, and it does in fact run that resolution, although it seems that the windows and fonts in X do not. They are much too large; what is supposed to be a 10pt font on a 1600x1200 screen is physically larger than 12pt printed font; the windows are larger as well, although I can't be sure if that's just a result of them scaling to match the fonts; this occurs in both Gnome and Fluxbox, I haven't had any other wm installed to test it with.

I've tried tweaking the geometries in xorg.conf, and they're as they should be. I tried turning down the DPI on the fonts in Gnome, which kind of worked - although I had to turn the fonts down to 80 DPI in order to make it look somewhat decent, and the windows were still too large.

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on here? I can post links to screenshots and/or copies of my xorg.conf file if anybody wants to look at them.

How did you obtain these values in your X configuration?
DisplaySize 404 303

Also, does this problem exist if you temporarily switch to using the 'nv' X driver?

Thanks,
Lonni

re: the numbers: I found a tutorial online for determining the geometry - the physical geometry of my monitor is slightly different from that (406.4mm x 304.8mm, or a 16"x12" screen), which I adjusted slightly so that I got a proper ratio for the resolution.
It's also probably worth noting that adding this line did nothing to alleviate the problem.

And yes, the distro was originally configured to use the nv drivers; the problem still remains no matter which one I use.

This is not an nvidia driver bug if the problem is present with other drivers.

It's not just an issue of it using 100dpi fonts instead of 75 because of the high resolution?

Oh, I'm certain it's not a driver bug, I just thought there may be something weird with the way the card reports its information. But if that makes it a poor question for this forum, can somebody tell me where I can get some help? I'm taking shots in the dark at this point since I can't find any helpful information anywhere.

TierMann: I'd thought about that; but when I comment out the 100-dpi font folders the problem still remains; and besides that my resolution reports as 100x100, so shouldn't 100-dpi fonts display correctly?

They should display "correctly" at that res, yes, but it's still opinion if it's too big or not . It was just an idea though. I had the same problem once with 100dpi being too big for my taste so I ended up going back 75.

I also noticed you have unscaled fonts ahead of the others in your font path. That's the only real difference in mine.

Well, I went in and edited xorg.conf to put the 100dpi font lines behind the 75dpi lines, and then went back in later and completely commented out the 100dpi lines and any unscaled lines. The problem still remains... I've got a screenshot attached here that should demonstrate. Some of the fonts seem manageable, but notice how huge the fonts are in the gaim Preferences window and Buddy List (keeping in mind that this is a 1600x1200 resolution shot).

Try editing /usr/X11R6/bin/startx, and in the serverargs="" line, put the following inside the quotes: -dpi 72. It should read serverargs="-dpi 72"

Restart X and see what happends. If you find the fonts too small, use 96 instead of 72.

I think this should work
