Thanks for the suggestion (I actually hadn't seen that configuration change in my searches online), but nothing changed after editing the file and restarting X.

The fonts look the same as default gnome/gtk2 does to me at 1280x1024. I changed all my fonts to Bitstream Vera Sans 9pt using gnome's font settings in Desktop -> Prefs -> Fonts. Other than that, your font sizes in firefox are almost perfectly the same as mine so I don't think it's X.

I'm sorry that didn't help.

I had a similar problem with huge font sizes in GTK applications. The way I got the problem solved, was the way I described above, because my window manager (Fluxbox) doesn't have a font configuration utility. If you use KDE or Gnome, use the font utility they provide instead.

OK, I think I have it working... acceptably.
I too use fluxbox, but since I use GDM apparently I can still use the Gnome font configuration to take care of things.
There are still some fonts that render ridiculously huge, though, despite all my changes to both global and application font preferences... so I'm still not convinced that I'm fixing the problem, but rather that I'm just compensating for it. But whatever, I can deal with it, I suppose.
