Default (beta) nvidia-settings not detecting VGA monitor correctly

I'm using the beta drivers I'm using I have a setup with a GeForce FX 5900XT as my primary, AGP vid card and I have two identical EN9110 screens plugged in one in the digital port and the other in the VGA port. The second video card is a Geforce 6200 and has a Dell P780.

nvidia-settings detects the digital EN9110 and the Dell and it detects that there is something connected to the VGA port on the 5900, but I can't get anything above 800x600 on it. I've tried going in to xorg.conf myself and entering the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh rates and metamodes myself, but it didn't help.

I'm thinking I'll have to configure xorg.conf myself since nvidia-settings is insufficient but convincing it to to a three-headed, two-vid-card display with xinerama extensions AND hardware acceleration is very difficult. I did it once for a short time but I've since reinstalled that system and forgot to back up the xorg.conf. I have attached my current xorg.conf.

Please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

Ah sorry, I wasn't aware this had been responded to.

Attached is the output of Xorg.0.log after using startx -- verbose 6. I had to break it up into three parts because the 209KB file was over the max of 100KB for the forums. I also attached my current xorg.conf because it has changed since the last version I posted.

Here is the relevant erroneous part of the startx log:

Default Re: (beta) nvidia-settings not detecting VGA monitor correctly

Perhaps its a problem with my screens? I swapped plugs on the monitors and now the VGA connection is working fine, but not the digital. This is very strange because both of them work without a problem in Windows.

Is there any way I can override the EDID settings? I know they work because when I swap the plugs without restarting X, the picture is displayed on the other without a problem.

This is the relevant part of the xorg.0.log when I switch the plugs so now the working monitor is VGA and the non-working is digital:

You haven't posted the bug report that I requested, however based on what you have posted, it looks like you have a bad VGA cable. The EDID is completely bogus for the display device that is using that cable.

Sorry, I guessed the xorg output would be the log you needed since I wasn't aware of nvidia-bug-report.sh until I searched for it.

well it couldn't be the cable because when I switched the cables on the back of the monitor, now the VGA one, which used to be the digital one is working and the digital one isn't. (so its always the left monitor that works) This suggests that one of my monitors isn't sending the EDID information correctly. I know the monitor itself works and I have no problems in Windows so I decided to ignore theEDID information. When I did that, the x server or nvidia driver actually crashed. I have attached an actual nvidia-bug-report of that. The only difference in my xorg.conf is the added line:

Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"

In the screen section.

The solution here is not to disable the EDID modes, as its working just fine on one of your displays. The solution is to generate a modeline for the CRT with the bogus EDID, and request that modeline.

Thanks,
Lonni

can you provide further instruction on generating a modeline for the CRT? How does this differ from the MetaModes line I already have and how do I stop the mode request from being invalidated by bogus EDID data?

Also, regardless of the correctness of disabling EDID modes, it should not result in a fatal error. Is this a bug in the driver or in xorg?

Right, X shouldn't crash, however its not clear what is triggering that.

You can generate a modeline with gtf.

Thanks,

I tried adding the modeline

# 1280x1024 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 80.17 kHz; pclk: 138.54 MHz
Modeline "1280x1024_75" 138.54 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1069 -HSync +Vsync

to my xorg.conf in the monitor section and changed the metamodes to reflect the 1280x1024_75 mode. I got this error on start of X

What you posted is a warning, and shouldn't be fatal. I need to see a bug report that captures whatever problem you're currently having. It would also be a good idea to give your mode name a unique name ("my1280", etc).

Thanks,
Lonni

Yeah, it wasn't fatal - it just didn't initialize that screen so I was only working with the DFP. I also tried changing the mode name, but that didn't change anything. Here is the bug report.
