Default NVIDIA-Driver doesn't work (any more) with DELL Inspiron 8200

Please help!
NVIDIA Driver doesn't work (anymore) with DELL Inspiron 8200, Geforce4 440 Go
and fixed resolution of 1600x1200.
An earlier version (I don't remember which one) worked already!

Default Re: NVIDIA-Driver doesn't work (any more) with DELL Inspiron 8200

Are you using 1.0-7676? You'll need to specify a modeline for 1600x1200.

Thanks,
Lonni

Do you know valid values for the mode line?
Please post it

I've used the XFree86 driver "nv", called xvidtune and got the ModeLine.
But the nvidia driver doesn't accept this data and switchs always to mode 1400x1050!

mickpf,
Start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5
and then generate and post a bug report, and I can provide you with a modeline.

Thanks,
Lonni

Default Re: NVIDIA-Driver doesn't work (any more) with DELL Inspiron 8200

hello mickpf,
this problem is known for any driver newer than 61.xx on some Dell Latitude and Inspiron Models equipped qith a particular model of UXGA UltraSharp TFT manufactured by Samsung. Dell buyed the panels sold as UXGA UltraSharp at 5 different manufacturers. Only the Notebooks equipped with Samsung TFT's are affected. This is due to the data in the EDID Chip in the panel is returning faulty data when panel configuration data is read out. Don't know why this ever worked before or what has changed in the drivers so that we see that error now. The problem is the same in Windows with every driver newer than 61.xx. Since Dell supports only Drivers up to 43.xx for Windows i think there is no cure in near sight. This can't be corrected by system or video bios updates. There has to be a workaround in the drivers to correct this.

Some possibilities:

use no driver newer than 61.xx on your card. 61.xx doesn't compile against newest kernels but i noticed workarounds in the gentoo linux forums to get it to compile.

use nv driver, works for all resolutions in X, but has no 3D support.

if you still want to use the newest nvidia drivers in X you can generate a modeline for 1600x1200@60 Hz and put it into X config. You will have to specify OverideEDID Option in the nvidia part. If you use lower resolutions these will scale to 1400x1050 showing colorful bars around the picture. I don't know of any solution to get rid of this.

Although this all is sounding not too amazing, maybe this is a help for you. I too use a Dell Notebook, a Latitude C840 which is basically exactly the same machine, and i started investigating after having the same problem. My final solution was to swap the panel for another one i bought for just 50 euros at ebay, selling my old one for a bit more than 100 euros

You are right!
As every DELL-customer I've got/bought 2 panels. :-)
For stereo view... :-)
With the second panel the driver works fine!

Thumbs up Re: NVIDIA-Driver doesn't work (any more) with DELL Inspiron 8200

I manage to have nvidia working on my inspiron 8200 with Ubuntu Dapper by adding
in Section "Device"
Option "UseEDID" "False"
in Section "Screen"
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"
in Section "Monitor"
UseModes "Modes[0]"

Then
Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes[0]"
Modeline "1600x1200" 170.89 1600 1688 1896 2288 1200 1200 1203 1244
EndSection
