For starters you shouldn't install the nvidia.com package, but use the one included already in Ubuntu through the linux-restricted-modules package.

So, then how do I install the 1.0-6629 driver on ubuntu? I need that one to get accelerated graphics and have no use at all for the newest driver.

Why the old one? If you have a Geforce2 or earlier you can use the linux-restricted-modules-nvidia-legacy or something like that...

EDIT:
Oh, wait, I'm thinking Breezy. If you are using Hoary you should follow the linked page..

Because I have a GeForce4 420 Go 32M which fails to work with any driver > 6629 in accelerated mode.

You want this how to from the Ubu forums. I followed this to get the 7667 drivers to support my 6200 AGP and it worked perfectly.
