Unhappy Tv-output hangs computer at shutdown

Hi,
I'm using RHFC2 with kernel 2.6.6 and xorg as X server. The prob happens when I use the TV Output, then I can't leave the X server anymore, else I get a black screen and the compie seems to hang. That also happens at shutdown of course. Has anybody got an idea ?

My graphic card is a GeForce 4 Ti4200 and I'm running driver 5336.

Here's my xorg.conf file :

I have the same problem, same card, same driver. With the old drivers, I could
use both my monitor and the tv at the same time, no problem, but after the
'upgrade' to 5336, I've had to disable the tv-out in order to be able to log out
without crashing. So far I've not found a better solution. Not much help, I know,
but now at least you know it's a common problem :-(

Having exactly the same symptoms with the same card on 7174 drivers. Don't have tv-out enabled at the moment (for obvious reasons) so can't get any automated diagnostics.

Should someone be in need for anything particular, let me know and I'll attach the data.

Same problem here with my ti4200. System hangs when I restart/shutdown X or switch to the console. Happens with any of the newer driver releases.

Is there a chance that I get it to work with an older driver release (pre 5336)?

Please nvidia, if you can introduce a bug you can get rid of it (or else I must assume that nvidia wants me to buy one of their newer products to fix the bug myself. This won't happen!)

Exclamation Re: Tv-output hangs computer at shutdown

Same thing happens to me. In addition to this though, I can't start up my system with tv-out enabled + s-video connected to the TV. My system doesn't exactly hang, since I can still SSH into it and do what I gotta do to remedy gay problems like this. Right now my only solution has been connecting pins 1-6,2-7,3-8 with paper clips to fool the card into thinking there is a monitor and then connecting the s-video after it has started up. Otherwise anytime it looks to the built-in nvidia tv-out encoder while it displays the console over the same decoder there is a deadlock of some sort. Same reason why switching from X to console produces a problem for all of you guys. The problem exists for me both ways. I'll just keep complaining till it gets fixed, but it seems to be a software semaphore that doesn't get initialized or reset or something. It's definitely software since this isn't a problem when booted with windows. Sadly, windows doesn't have anything that can compare to mythtv so that's not an option for me.

So maybe nvidia can pay attention to one of these threads and fix this problem with the built-in NVIDIA tv encoder!

I don't think nvidia care about this problem (maybe they are quite comfortable with their 'old' stuff not working correctly).

This issue has been known since 2003, when the first 5*** driver was released. Some threads even mention that exactly the same problem started with version 4191. Since then absolutely nothing has changed. That was nearly 2 years ago (e.g. 'System Freez after closing X' 07-15-03). So I don't think this will change in the future.

Maybe not, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't change. My ATI card didn't work for a long time because ATI support sucked as I'm sure all of you know, but now it works quite well, so maybe I'll be switching it up. ATI can have my money. We show our approval by buying certain brands, well, ATI kinda hurt for thier lack of interest in the linux community, but I think they've realized thier own mistakes and are headed in the right direction. Maybe NVIDIA needs to learn the same lesson as more and more HTPCs are sprouting up, TV-OUT needs to be working well with linux distros. MythTV is IMHO the best solution out there available for HTPCs but you gotta have a card to back it up. I guess we'll see. Hopefully this lack of attention will change since I really do like my NVIDIA card. I'm just not happy with the current situation of the TV-OUT.
Maybe if this thread gets big enough it will draw some more attention...but probably not.

I'm also _very_ unhappy about this problem.

It really _screws_ the TV experience, and even _blocks_ the use of the TV-out for my girlfriend!

I'm considering a _change_ of manufacturer, and I'm spreading the word in the community that nvidia support is NOT AT ALL what people think...

I really hope for nvidia's sake that they will react to this thread and fix this problem.
