Default Re: 7667 issues; black screen/ X windows crashing

X is hanging when trying to initialize the GLX extension. There are two sets of libnvidia-tls.so libraries installed with the driver (with a symlink for each). Please try renaming one at a time, and then starting X, and see if that has any impact:

/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7676
/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7676
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1

Thanks,
Lonni

Are you using the official NVIDIA driver package or someone else's? libnvidia-tls.so.1 should exist in /usr/lib/tls if you're using the official driver package.

That didnt help. Offical package yes (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7667-pkg1.run). That folder is empty.

Then your driver installation is broken, as you should have both sets of libraries. Does installing 1.0-7676 fix this?

Weird. I uninstalled that 7667 and installed 7676. X started once. After seconnd reboot, failed. It has done this before. Its like something brakes it. But /usr/lib/tls/ is still empty. It was empty after reinstall.

Check in /etc/init.d for an nvidia-glx init script (or something similarly named), and remove it. Debian (and possibly its derivitives, such as Ubuntu) ship that script with their own nvidia driver packages, and it will break the official driver on bootup.

Thanks,
Lonni

Bingo!! There was leftovers. I did have removed all nvidia related stuff via synaptic, but there was still nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-legacy files in that folder.

THANK YOU!!!!

I'm having the same GLX extension problem and unfortunately the things to try here have not yet helped me. If you could, I'm posting my debug file in the hope someone might be able to help.

This bug report indicates that you're using the 'nv' driver, not the nvidia driver.

Wow. Well that's embarrasing. I know I changed that at one time. I just never looked back. I'm ashamed to say ho long I've been struggling with it. Thank you so much.

Unfortunately, no. Sorry, I should have been more clear: If I have NvAGP=2 or NvAGP=3, the system completely freezes with a black screen. I have to do a hard-reboot. The best I can do is provide the partial Xorg.log that gets written. I've attached it.

If I have NvAGP=1, it starts X okay, but

Code:
$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status:          Disabled

AGP initialization failed, please check the ouput
of the 'dmesg' command and/or your system log file
for additional information on this problem.
and
Code:
$ dmesg | grep -i nvrm
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-7667
NVRM: not using NVAGP, an AGPGART backend is loaded!

Sorry, I can't really be of more help.
