I have a few questions:
0) If you comment out the glx module in your xorg.conf does that have any impact?
1) Does this problem go away if you remove the vesafb kernel module from loading?
2) Does this problem go away if you upgrade to more recent kernel, such as 2.6.14.5 ?
3) Try reinstalling the 1.0-8178 driver first with the --force-tls=new option (and testing X) and then with --force-tls=classic and testing X, and see if either makes a difference.

Thanks,
Lonni

I'm experiencing a similar issue. I'm running the GeForce 6600 in a knoppMyth distribution (Debian). I get the same black screen then the system locks up. It sometimes takes a few minutes for the system to lock hard. If I use the 'nv' driver, the system boots, tries to start X, then displays a message the it can't start X and leaves me at a login. I logged in and ran the bug report, then changed the driver to 'nvidia' and tried to start gdm. That caused the black screen/lockup issue. I had started an ssh session prior to that which allowed me to run the bug report after the x server had crashed.

I can't upload the log files since they are both over 100k. Any suggestions to limit the size of these files so I can get them to you?

I'm new to this type of troubleshooting so any assistance would be helpful.

Thanks

The biggest problem that I'm seeing is that your vmalloc space is exhausted:
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-8178 Wed Dec 14 16:22:51 PST 2005
allocation failed: out of vmalloc space - use vmalloc=<size> to increase size.

Have you tried booting setting vmalloc=128m ?

I have a few other questions:
0) Have you tested with a much more recent kernel (such as 2.6.14.6)?
1) Have you experimented with different values for NvAGP ?
2) Have you tried booting with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel options?
3) What kind of motherboard do you have, and which BIOS version?
4) If you disable vesafb does that help at all?

Thanks,
Lonni

No. I don't know how to do that.

Aside from the new kernel and the motherboard, are these all things that can be set in the XF86Config-4 file?

In other words, this is pretty far beyond my knowledge of the inner workings of the kernel and drivers.

Can you point me down the right path so I can see what I can mess up??

vmalloc gets set in /etc/grub.conf (or /boot/grub/menu.lst ). Same for noapic and acpi=off

vesafb can probably be disabled in the same file above by setting something like:
video=vesafbff vga=normal

NvAGP is set in your XF86Config. See the NVIDIA README ( /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README.txt ) for more details.

Thanks,
Lonni

timboNZ,
I'm not clear how your problem directly relates to the previous entries in this thread, however I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a 'vanilla' 2.6.14.6 kernel without PREEMPT?
1) What kind of motherboard and BIOS version are you using?
2) I don't see anything in the bug report that appears to correlate to a system hang. Please generate a bug report immediately during or after this problem occurs (and before starting X again).

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni

Thanks for your reply...

0 - I've compiled a 2.6.14.6 kernel with the same .config less the preempt stuff and so far it's worked all day with no issues...

1 - I have an ASUS P5S800 with bios version 1016-007 (the latest from ASUS).

2 - Started as soon as I got the OS up and running (first off Knoppmyth and now Gentoo) either watching live tv or a video of a recorded program the video would lock up and X would consume 100% cpu, after a short while the screen would go blank. Same thing happend with glxgears etc. looking throught the logs there would be; xid errors in syslog, nvidia wait errors in X.org.0.log, and timed out waiting for video buffers in .xsession-errors log file. The nVidia log file I attached was done immediatly after such a crash.

So far however with the bog standard kernel without preempt all's well. I'll recompile a gentoo kernel without preempt and see how thing get on and report back...

Once again thanks...

Regards
Tim

My machine is running LILO, not Grub. I found the lilo.conf file and added vmalloc=256m. When I run LILO to rebuild the mbr, it says is doesn't recognize the vmalloc setting.

Does LILO use a different command for vmalloc?
