What do you guys think? After playing the next gen demos that have come out I can't say anything else has the refinement of HL2. Seems to me HL2's performance is amazingly fast compared to the visual experience. I mean FEAR looks much better in many cases but seems to have lacking performance, especially compared to HL2. Obviosuly the technolgoy is more complex but the visual experience/performance ratio is not that good in my mind. I can even drop the textures and lighting down to a HL2 type of level and get nowhere near the performce level. Plus the physic doesn't compare either, shelves can't be blown away by grenades and all kinds of other stuff. FEAR is an awesome game, but HL2 has a level of refinement and polish unlike anything I have seen. Opinions?

I dunno, I like doom 3 better in that respect. Sure I get about 10 less FPS, but it actually works, and it doesn't have any bugs.

My thought on the most polished game I've played was UT2004. First, unpatched version out of the box was nearly flawless in every way. Of course it has been improved since and some minor bugs fixed, but what a good experience out of the box... almost unheard of these days. HL2 was pretty good though. I recall having some sound and stutter issues and do not know when and how often Steam updated the game anyway.
Edit: I remember more bugs now. I had two Alex's in one part of the game. I had a couple of crashes to desktop. There were also serious AI flaws with team mates getting stuck. Right now, the sound in HL2 is delayed by about 1 second. It wasn't like that when I played it through. |

The original Half-Life is/was a far more polished product than the sequel. It had nowhere near the technical issues (being that it was based on the already established Quake engine) while offering exceptional visuals (for the time) and great performance.
Had HL2 looked and performed like it did in the E3 videos from a couple years ago, I may have agreed with the sentiment that it was the most polished. But the stuttering problems and issues with Steam, IMO, keep it from that status. There are other games, some of which have already been mentioned here, that I believe were and still are more polished than HL2. |

Well I've never experienced a single problem with HL2...for me, it's been as solid as Doom 3, but in light of other users' problems, I'd have to say Doom 3 was the most polished game ever at release. Even though HL2 is a better game, Doom 3 has no bugs that I know of and ran perfectly right out of the box. Can't say the same for HL2, with some people at least.

Well for me it would be the old Lucas Arts adventure games. They were perfect from word go.
More modern games Doom 3 easily. Possibly Age of Mythology and Warhammer 40k DoW |

I don't remember having any problems serious enough with HL2 to stop me from playing it so I think it was fairly well done, I mean they had forever to finish it so it better be polished.
