Default Am I the only one starting to hate the UE3?

No doubt... the engine is amazing... but I can't go a freaking day without seeing a new "____ is using UE3" and I will be honest... I am really starting to hate it. I am sure UT2007 will be awesome and blah blah blah... but I want people to at least TRY to make their own, better engine.

I am sure I am alone on this though... just had to get it off my chest :\.

Well, to be honest I've been hoping for more and more people to forgo developing their own engines. I mean in theory, when you license components, you can spend more time working on game code and game content instead of developing the technology which drives them, and that should result in better games. At least in theory...

I guess my problem is the fact that there doesn't seem to be much competition... it seems it is UE3, Doom 3, or Jupiter (or whatever the poo the FEAR engine is called)... I guess you could say source... but I don't see much potential there and doubt there are many people licensing it.

EDIT: Forgot the CryEngine also... the next version might get licensed quite a bit as it is looking very nice.

Yeah, I guess I see what you mean. But I know with Doom 3 and UE3, the people making those engines do it for the love of exploring new hardware, so I doubt you really need to worry about lack of competition making them lazy, although I suppose it could one day happen. And all the engine people seem to have the same goal, photo realism, so it's not like we are really getting any variety anyways. It's not like anyone is developing a cell shaded engine for example.

I guess I just don't see the purpose of having companies make their own engine anymore, and given how many of them license, I doubt they do either.

dunno after playing CoD2, I kinda wish they used someone else's engine its nice and all atm, but could be better aslong as the gameplay is good I dont care what engine they used, but I do like see nice frames and less frustration as to why my comp cant handle this game when this other game runs fine.

How can you hate a game engine? I think you mean... Epic.

Oh well, lets just add this to the list of stuff Mr. Hunt hates.

Bah.. I don't hate the engine... just the fact that everybody seems to be using it... I want different engines... not a bunch of games on the exact same engine.

Dude, a company's own engine doesn't always mean it's gonna be good, innovating or anything else good. It takes TONS of time, money and labor to create anything that's up-to-date and on the same level as other games in the genre.

I mean look at COD2's very own engine...... not the greatest engine i've ever seen. Still looks very Q3ish.... I mean I'd be 10 times more happier if COD2 used UE3 instead. Make that a 100 times actually.

As far as Unreal Engine itself, it's not just UE3. There are tons of games (prolly more than any other I can think of) that use the Unreal engine. Like all the splinter cells, rainbow sixs, just tons of games in general.

I wish call of duty 2 used the unreal engine not that pile of crap they have developed. It will still be fun to play though.

Why? You'd rather they take resources away from building the game on an established, fully featured engine and instead build their own which may or may not end up being anywhere near as good? Why reinvent the wheel?

While using a fully-featured nearly bug free engine has advantages, the cost for such engines must not be forgotten. The savings from making the COD2 engine is probably huge, so employing a few extra guys to build an engine is going to save $$$ in the end.

Epic develops quality engines, the more dev teams that license it the better for the rest of us IMHO.
