The PC version is rumored to be finished and gathering dust as Bethesda fights to have an acceptable framerate on the hastened Xbox port.

The beta version shown at X05 apparently didn't have soft shadows and the render distance was far lower than seen in the PC screenshots. Yet, framerate was described by many indipendent sources to be "choppy".

That's surprising, if true. I'd have thought the xbox version to have much higher priority during development. Combined with better hardware specs, I'd expect it to be the better running version at launch.

Its probably a ram thing... how much ram does the 360 have? Like 256Mb total shared? They make these consoles pretty damn powerfull, but they kill them by using about a quarter of the ram they should have. I know they find ways around it but I really think thats one thing PCs will always have over consoles: more stuff, faster.

The 360 has 512 shared. I suspect the PC version is polished because they've been working on PC hardware for around 3 years (I think that's the dev timeframe...), where they'd have only recently(ish) received 360 devkits. It's hard to develop for a platform when you don't actually have that platform.

Ridiculous DOES not have an 'e' in it. It comes from "ridicule" and has less than nothing to do with the colour red.

That's what I thought first, but it's 512 megs, not 256. Sure, it's lower than a typical PC, but it's also missing a lot of overheads like the OS and most system services. The ram is still the only thing I can think of, even though 512 megs should be enough for titles to be comparable to current gen PC games.

Still, if it's the rendering distance that's the problem, it can't really be memory related, since the same amount of ram for the whole level will used either way.

Wow, I didnt realize it had that much ram... thats a lot better than the 64Mb shared on the original XBox.

If anything, this is good news for us PC gamers. It means someone still cares enough to polish a PC version of a multiplatform game... usually they just aim for the console the whole time and let the PC version to go hell.

Since I'm very interested in this game I've read every possible preview, particulary those of people who have been at X05 in Amsterdam. Some of the info come from the official forums.

There are 5 distinct bootleg videos from X05 4 of which show actualy gameplay, altough the quality is not very high. The lack of soft shadows and the jerkyness is evident, though.

It looks also that MS is holding 'stealth' xbox 360 conferences around the country and inviting people connected to various gaming sites.

Look at this [H]ardOcp thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread....8&page=4&pp=20

I think that the real problem is not having the final hardware for enough time. The final development kits arrived in late august. This coupled with the little experience of Bethesda in the console market may be the cause behind the trouble Oblivion is experincing. The PC shots are amazing and even more so are the videos (Particulary the one with the closed door presentation at E3) but everything I've seen coming from the Xbox port looks almost subpar.

If Oblivion is not going to look as impressive as it is now on the PC it will have an hard time competing with games like PGR3 or Kameo ( http://media.teamxbox.com/games/ss/1198/1126828308.jpg O_O )

New Oblivion preview by a lucky fella who was invited at a recent Xbox showcase http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/i...owtopic=173912

The guy was well impressed by what he saw.
