hello, i'm having trouble with FC_64 recodnizing the ethernet on this board. any ideas of what might be wrong? I only see the loopback adapter in my network devices but no eth0. Is there a good driver that I can install manually? any help would be appreciated.

The nForce driver should support them. You'll need to update the FC4 kernel to one of the more recent for the forcedeth driver to recognize it.

I've only been able to load Fedora Core 4 (kernel 2.6.11) and it doesn't look like there is any ethernet support for this board. the device shows up in lspci but it won't activate. I've tried a 3com920 pci card as well but it doesn't even detect it in lspci. does the ethernet work in suse 10? the output to the monitor is awful but it's the only other distro i've been able to install.

After reviewing my previous comment, I was mistaken. The version of forcedeth that supports the NIC in that motherboard is not yet in the kernel, and you'll need to manually rebuild it from here:

Thanks,

I have been digging in the kernel sources to try and decipher what hardware is supported. The chipset is called MCP51 in the kernel sources. I cannot comment on what level of support is available - only that some support has been added.
  • Kernel 2.6.11: No reference to MCP51 in pci_ids.h, so the kernel does not recognize the chipset. No support expected beyond generic hardware support.
  • Kernel 2.6.12: PCI IDs for MCP51 added to pci_ids.h, so kernel recognizes the chipset. Reference added to driver amd74xx.c, so specific IDE support is expected.
  • Kernel 2.6.13: Reference added to forcedeth.c, so specific ethernet support is expected.
  • Kernel 2.6.14: Reference added to sata_nv.c, so specific SATA support is expected.
No reference to MCP51 exists yet in the audio driver intel8x0.c, which is used for audio on nForce 2/3/4, so no audio support is expected. Even the ALSA development sources has no support, so it may take a while.

According to distrowatch.com the following kernels are used in these distros:
  • Fedora Core 4: kernel 2.6.11
  • Ubuntu 5.10: kernel 2.6.12
  • Suse 10: kernel 2.6.13
Of course vendor specific patches may be added to the vanilla kernel sources.

netllama: can you comment on the level of support in the NVIDIA nforce 1.0-0306 driver?

I wish NVIDIA would release more information, so we could get more support for their fancy hardware! As it is, I am on the edge of giving up and may buy a VIA board instead - maybe even switch to Intel alltogether. Intel seem to be very open about documenting their hardware.

Regards,

Here is the test result for my TForce6100-754(GeForce 6100 + NForce 410)

[TForce6100-754 from Biostar]
MCP51 bridge
Realtek 8201BL PHY, Realtek ALC650 codec

Linux dist.: Ubuntu 5.10
Kernel: 2.6.14 with ck patchset

S-ATA: works with sata_nv in kernel 2.6.12(ubuntu default), hdparm shows about 67MB/sec read performance.(WD1600JS)

Network: doesn't work with NVIDIA nforce 1.0-0306 driver and forcedeth 0.46 too. forcedeth shows debug message

"no link detected by phy - falling back to 10HD"
"no link during initialization."

or

"nv_update_linkspeed: PHY advertises 0xxxx, lpa 0xxxx"
"bad ability 0xxxx - falling back to 10HD."
"no link during initialization."

Sound: is loaded NVIDIA nforce 1.0-0306 driver and lsmod shows nvsound module is used by audio device but I can't get sound.

As you know, everything is fine with Windows system. =)

I would really appreciate any solution about this.

Question Re: Linux on NForce 430 + GeForce 6150

I am not really sure if this is valid for this thread.

Even thought ASUS has not yet posted linux drivers for the A8N-VM CSM which I have on backorder,
I did notice that they have posted linux drivers for the A8N-VM.
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us There are downloads for Chipset, Audio, and Display.

The description for Display says Version 1.0-6111, but upon downloading it, the read me says Version: 1.0-8168.

Can someone that knows more about linux than I do tell me if these drivers will work on the A8N-VM CSM? (I am going to attempt Gentoo on this board.)

Please tell me that I'm blind or something, but I can't see *any* Linux drivers on that page. Only Windoes.

Damn, you are right. I know they were there last night (09-NOV-05, 6:55 pm CST) because I downloaded them to look at. I don't have my motherboard yet so I can't try them.

OK, but these files are old (from August) so I guess they are the same that you can download on the NVIDIA page (and NOT supporting the GeForce chipset).
Seems to be just a mistake which has been corrected by Asus.

To bad.

Those are the release notes from the 1.0-6111 driver. The TNT2 hasn't been supported after the 1.0-7174 legacy driver.

Thanks,
Lonni

Funnily enough the 6111 drivers are the ones included on the Asus driver CD for my A8N-VM CS motherboard.

Do you have any indication of when we may have a functioning driver, please?
