Ta,

Where did you get the adapter? No one seems to no about it at Asus. I just bought an X1300 card instead.

I bought mine from Asus RMA in Fremont, CA for $10 + $5 shipping (sorry can't find the number right now), but it looks like you can get them from their online store now: http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp...=315&catid=137
Hope that helps!

OK. So yesterday I bought and installed an Asus A8N-VM CSM (with an Amd-64 3700+) in my Linux box. Hours of troubleshooting later, I found this thread. Now I realize I'm not really up for doing all the bs it takes to get this board working right. My question is this: anybody have a recommendation for a board with comparable features, but that WORKS?

Buy the MSI board. See info on Anandtech forum. It's mostly windows stuff there, but I got the board and it works very well with Gentoo linux. There's basic info like list of features and bit of comparison to other boards. Also there's notes on how to flash bios if you need to.

jeffmc, did you ever get sound working on GA-K8N51GMF-9? I haven't had any luck either. When I look at Hardware Information in YaST2 it says I have "MCP51 High Definition Audio" for sound... which is what it detected during the initial install. Installation and configuration of nvsound has not unseated MCP51...

Browse the Asus support pages a bit and you'll find something about stores selling the Asus products. That way I found a German online store and after inquiring about the adapter, they sent me a bill and were ready to send it to me. Before that happened though, my local store managed to find one for me

This is just guessing: Some of the Asus motherboards come with the adapter and it's compatible with other Asus motherboards also?

Thanks. I ended up buying a GA-K8N51 GMF-9 instead. Got the video working no problem (ubuntu), and now working on the sound.

Update: I ended up switching from 32-bit ubuntu Breezy Badger (the standard release) to 64-bit Dapper Drake, which is a bleeding edge release candidate. Had to follow some fairly arduous instructions to get the nVidia drivers going correctly, but they work now, and the sound is up, too. It's a great board.

Has anyone had the Linux install execute VERY slowly? I tried Centos, Fedora, and Ubuntu. I'll not go into great detail yet. I have the A8N-VM CSM MB and set the system up for Dual boot with XP Pro. The install, when it completes takes about 5 hours. Really strange. I can't figure out how to determine what is causing the horrible response from Linux installer. Windows runs just fine. Any ideas out there?

If you're using SATA, you might need to use "noapic nolapic" on your kernel boot line for the install CD. Because of the borked ACPI in the A8N-VM CSM bios, I was getting nasty I/O errors on the SATA driver. I didn't see it on install (using Gentoo), but on subsequent heavy disk I/O operations such as drive-to-drive copies. It would run really fast for some random amount of time, then it would error out and stall for about 30 seconds. After the system was all up and installed, I installed a patched DSDT and the problem went away completely.

Hi.

ASUS CSM VM board here.

Have been running happily FC4 with 2.6.14-1.1653 for a few months (well I was away for most of it). Came back, decided to update, got the 2.6.15-1.1833 kernel, everything was fine except that my patched alsa sound 1.0.11rc2 began to have the screechy sound that some earlier install attempts encountered. I suspect this might be a 2.6.15 problem (since this screechy sound only appear in 2.6.15 not .14).

Downgraded to 2.6.14 again for the moment until

(a) alsa support is present
or
(b) I can find a few days to actually try to trouble shoot this problem
or
(c) somebody who has FC4 on this Mobo that has upgraded to 2.6.15 and have no problems with sound help me out

just a heads up that 2.6.15 FC4 with alsa 1.0.11rc2 may be troublesome and not worth upgrading to if you already have everything working at 2.6.14.

thanks!
