Default What do you expect from a FPS?

I thought this would be a good thing to talk about, while we wait it out for the lastest & greatest.
I expect:
1. Serious eye and ear candy, these are the games to show it off and let it all hang out.
2. Decent story that keeps the game moving with fitting enviroments and weapons
3. Excellent pacing.
4. Strong AI and tactics.
5. No "over innovation"...tweaks to typical FPS gameplay are great, but some idea's go to far and make the game annoying.
5. Stable and well coded
6. and most important to me is to get sucked into the game world.....to be done right when I'm playing I need to feel "in" the game.

1) Best possible graphics. i consider the FPS gener the motor for all future graphics tech.
2) Advanced AI.
3) Advanced physics.
4) High Qualtiy audio (obviously since its from FPV )
5) More than just pure action ... i'd expect a combo between FPS & RPG,adv, tactical & even sim elements.

This is difficult to answer, if I understand what you are asking.
All of those points are important.
Perhaps it would be easier to ask people of their opinion on the most important and the least important features.

Edit: Although to be fair, I also like recent FPSs to have really nice visuals. I've gotta say - AI doesn't bother me so much if it doesn't add to the enjoyment. If it does, then yeah - great, I dig it, but if it's just frustrating, I'd rather have the dramatic and repetitive on-rush of the Gladiator from Q2.

Edit 2: Also, AI can really matter - I'm not trying to do it down, I'm just saying it's not always that important. I actually think that AI is much more important in NON-FPS games, than it is in FPSs.

Ridiculous DOES not have an 'e' in it. It comes from "ridicule" and has less than nothing to do with the colour red.

Fun.

Half-Life 2 was not fun for me. Doom 3 was fun for me. Why don't people understand this?

I totally understand, but was just the opposite for me. Well the last 5 levels of so of Doom 3 were pretty interesting, but the rest was meh.

The number one thing is for the game to be enjoyable. If you are not having fun playing it then why play it?

Things I like to see in first person shooters:
Fun gameplay
Its own unique style (I wanna see something that sets it apart from every other fps)
Ever changing environments (this was the biggest turn off for me and Doom 3).

Everything else is is optional IMO. Sure graphics and sound technology are nice, but they normally don't add to the gameplay.

Stability, great graphics/audio, and atmosphere are the most important to me. I guess I prefer action over puzzles since a lot of puzzles seem to take me out of the game (i.e. make me feel like I'm playing a game instead of being in the game/story).

If the game is lacking in the graphics department, then it needs something unique that most other games don't have or have an incredible story to make me forget how much I'm hating the way it looks. Or, it could just be something incredibly simple and addictive like Bejeweled.

I guess, what I'm interested in is if peeps are looking for(and expecting) all the new FPS's to totally new and inovative, with gameplay never seen before or if they're looking for good solid shooters that are fun & entertaining.

I'm definately for the FuN....maybe I'm short sighted but I really don't see what more inovation can come out of FPSers without ruining them.
I say pick a theme, build a pretty world and give us lots of First Person things to Shoot....

There we go... somebody got it right .

I don't need anything fancy... if the game is fun but looks like crap, I won't mind.
