Anyone with a X850 or X1800XL? Actually, maybe Riptide can confirm the settings for the X850. If he also has 1600, then it seems more likely a fluke or due to beta drivers.

I have the latest steam updates and it defaults to 1600.

Seems to be a curious case with Ratchet's setup. Maybe he will update once he receives more info from Valve if there is indeed something going on.

Half life 2 asks for 1600 on the 6800, 7800 and x800-850 hardware, asks by default.

I just returned from a freinds who I sold my x850xt to and we checked HL2 and with 1600 set by default he is only getting 1200. dxsupport.cfg says 1600but what were seeing in game and screenshots is 1200. See the screens we made. 6800 Ultra and X850XT.

Ive been all through HL2 trying to get rid of my stutter since the 9/23 update
and unless there is some hidden settings I cant see it appears Catalyst is giveing 1200 when HL2 is asking for 1600 on the x1800 and x800-850, Or to be fair it could be valves wonderful codeing skills at work. My screens on x850xt show the same as Rage3d's screens. (I cant speak for x1800 as I cant test that one myself) but the screens point to it running the same path as x8xx. Some may think Ratchet made a mistake or it only happens with his setup, but my screens show the same thing. Also digit-life, their screens on x1800 and x850 show the same thing, missing landscape. Fireing Squad's screens show the same as well. When a app asks for one thing but recieves something else, that usually points to the driver, but not always. Driver bug, game bug, it sure doesnt make for the best image quality.

Notice around the center island (where the benches are) missing bushes and grass on x850, x1800.
http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/...0-part4-d.html

look at the screens withs plants.no vegetation in the distance for the x1800.

Btw absolutely love the way people are leaping all over this w/o any info to backup their comemnts
Spin away, woohoo.
I see no one with pitchforks and torches, some people would like to know whats going on thats all. As far as people makeing comments with no info to back them up, there are screenshots from 3 reputable reviewers that all show the same thing. You can bet your ass if 1 single Nvidia screenshot showed something like this let alone screens from 3 reviews the top thread in every forum that has a video card section or game section would be Nvidia Cheating...

Interesting.

"cl_detaildist" defaults to 1600, as expected.

Thanks for the info. What version of the drivers were y'all using for the ATI cards? If you're not using the betas sent to reviewers I guess that rules out the possibility that it's the beta drivers causing the card to not be recognized.

I also didn't realize other reviewers had seen the same thing.

I have default 1600 but I set it to 2600... big performance hit but love the better detail draw-in!

If it is something that is happening on Valve's end, shouldn't we be able to use something like 3danalyze to fool the game into thinking it's running on a X850XT (does the app provide a code for the X850s)?

If the issue is ATI drivers overriding the 1600 and using 1200, I'm not sure what we can do.
