Just wandering around the ship (the ship is impressive), the briefing, watching guys slide around in their chairs as they're working at computers stations, even stretching as they try to grab something out of their reach, is just incredible. They did a great job selling it, making you feel like you're participating in a movie. I thought Doom 3 did a pretty good job of that but Quake 4 has so much more detail. Wow.
I think this game does the best job of making it seem as though the AI characters are actually focusing and looking at you. There is a spot where two marines tell you how great you are on the ship and when you move their eyes move forst and the heads follow. What a great job Raven did...

I have no idea what's going on with Quake 4 for me. Hard locks despite the fact I use Default sound (The Screen freezes and sound loops). Drivers are 81.85. Fresh WinXP Install and WoW is the only other game installed. Never had an Id game lockup on me (Ever). I would love to say this game is sterling except I can only play for 10-15 mins (Sometimes 5mins) without it hard locking and requiring a reset. Audigy 2 Platinum. Brother is playing it fine on an Audigy 1. WoW runs perfectly fine. Just tried Doom 3 to check if it's not something with the engine and played that for 3 hours no problem. Tried both Audigy 2 Beta drivers and one generation earlier.

6800GT both over and underclocked - no difference.

Exact same problem here. I thought I had it licked last night; I was able to play for three hours straight, but I still get hard locks.

I may try the new beta bios for my mobo (A8N SLI Deluxe) which was posted a few days ago.

Back on topic, the game is excellent. I'm going to guess that motion capture was used for things like walking, running, gestures, etc. It really does add a sense of realism to your squadmates. The lighting and mood in general is very well done, even better than Doom 3. I wasn't a big fan of the Aqueducts level; the vehicle didn't respond all that well, and that part felt very rushed, as if little thought had been put into it.

Now, if only my machine wouldn't crash so much, I'd be playing the game instead of posting here! It's nice to see that the players themselves have decided to ignore the ocasionally unfair reviews the game has received and made up their own minds.

*** SPOILER AHEAD - highlight to read ***

The Stroggification sequence was gruesome, but the horror was pitched at the right level. I showed the sequence to my wife earlier and watched her reactions; she was horrified! Putting another chair in front of yours' was a stroke of genius - build the anticipation by showing what happens to the guy ahead of you, then let you experience it for yourself. I think that single-handedly has to be one of the most immersive moments in any video game that I can recall.

*** END SPOILER ***

Nothing to see here; keep scrolling, fella.

Has anybody tried this game on the ultra setting with a geforce 7800GT at 1280x1024? If so, how does it run?

I tried it with my setup but at 1600x1200 and it was choppy. With Doom 3 I could use the Ultra mode fine but here I can't.

I don't know how the developers do it, maybe they all use motion capture these days, but that was what I was thinking when looking at it also.

Raven actually has their own motion capture facility in their studio now, so they were able to do a ton of motion capture for Quake 4's animations.

Hmm...I think quake4 in ultra requires 2GB of memory.

Actually, what it really needs is a 512mb graphics card. 2GB will work also, but not as well.

Doom 3 said the same thing but it runs fine on my 6600GT in ultra. Quake4 looks like it uses over 1.3GB of RAM in ultra though.

During the "horror" sequence (no spoiler warning needed) since it appears that you are conscious and aware of your surroundings, I would have liked to have had the ability to "scream" as I heard others do so.

During that sequence it would have been simple to replace the "fire" action with a "scream" action.

You understand my meaning? Scream because you could.
