Just got the game ... im using OpenAL (specs in sig) ... games runs great at Ultra High 1280x1024 4xAA / 16xAF. Although it does get choppy at points when im outside and tons of sh!t is blowing up Anyone figure out any small tweaks to smooth things out but still run at the highest settings? A little choppiness outside does not bug me if its the only way I can play at the highest settings BTW... BADASS game!

Sure will. But I didn't get much accomplished as the power has been out all evening. After a few hours without power, I began having withdrawal symptoms and finally broke down and fired up the generator.

Looking forward to your demo benchmark. I went back and forth a lot about whether to get FEAR or Quake 4. I'm soooo glad I decided on Quake 4. There's really a great sense of a lot going on around you, especially once you board the Hannibal.

Hmm...I think I might do some system upgrades just for this game.

Gonna add 2GB of ram for a total of 3GB (which is the practical maximum for 32-bit CPU's for the most part - they can't fully utilize 4GB,) and probably replace my 6600GT with a 7800GT. The whole upgrade should cost me about $350 after I sell my 6600gt.

I gave the game a go for abit and Im not liking it much. It feels way too much like Doom 3 then Quake 2. I know some change is needed but its too drastic in my opinion. The enemies even lack the distinct sounds to give ya a heads up of whats coming. The game is as dark as D3 aswell. As for the graphics, its not much improved over D3, just new textures and models... nothing amazing or new implemented from the engine. The game just feels soo much like Doom 3, even the movement of the player, just doesn't "feel" like Quake 2.

Last major gripe is having a squadmate... I don't want people tagging along, this is Quake, Im suppose to be the lone soldier who defeats the hords.

Over all to me its a D3 Expansion, not a true Quake sequel.

I've been alternately playing quake 4 and FEAR over the last few days and have to say that I'm liking quake 4 more than FEAR. I haven't had this much pure first person shooter fun in ages...

Some of the imagery in Quake 4 is pretty disturbing. It reminds me of the Holocaust. I'm not sure which is creepier, FEAR's horror elements or Quake 4's genocide....

Just finished Q4. Outstanding is the only word that can describe the experience. I've not touched Multiplayer yet and am eagerly awaiting a mod that will allow coop play so I can re-play single player with a buddy (with TS).

I do hear the approaching enemies, Q4 does not remind me of Doom3 nor as another manifestation of Doom3. Raven did an excellent job and I eagerly await the Expansion Pack (wait until you see the Q4 ending ).

Simply put, I believe this game to be the best game released in the last three years. HL2, Pariah, and some of the other media-hyped/over-hyped shovelware can't even touch the quality of game this is. Doom3 was repetitive and while original, tended to be a little boring with the clear room, kill enemies that spawned behind you, rinse-repeat gameplay. Quake4 is nothing like Doom3. The plot is exceptional and the entire gameplay is quite immersive. The NPCs at no point get in the way and they actually aide you more than they would ever hinder you. If anything I say their inclusion adds depth to the story as well as another facet of gameplay. I enjoyed the player interaction with the NPCs.

I enjoyed the game at 1280x1024 @ 100Hz with 2xAA/4xAF and had no hiccups or issues, the gameplay was very smooth. I ran OpenAL for sound.

I am ready to start the single player campaign over again with the increased difficulty level. The game was well worth my $50 and I would have easily paid $100 or more for such a quality title.

[rant]
The fact that the Linux client was released two days after public release was outstanding and confirms the fact that iD/Raven are quality companies. Linux users don't have to deal with the garbage OpenAL drivers from Creative nor the SecureRom/SafeDisc shovelware copy protection. I don't have to feed my box CD's just to play the game. Don't knock the game because the host OS is trash. The cache/stutter/sluggishness can more than likely be attributed to pathetic drivers and the host OS's trash memory managment. Why users with 1GB or more of RAM still swap to disk (probably the most ineffecient operation in existance) is beyond me; you should disable the PagingExecutive (DWORD, in registry).

I am having an absolute blast with this game so far! Game runs about a steady 55-60 FPS on my mid range Dual Xeon 3.4 / BFG 6800 GT (running at 325/900 for artifacting reasons ) / 2 Gig box at 1680x1050 at high quality. Very impressed with the overall feel of the game - something about the feel of a Carmack engine game that other games such as FEAR will never be able to achieve. Very hard to describe...
