from what i read, this was an issue with doom3 as well and was on activisions support site, and it had something to do with the copy protection and winxp sp2.

i'm not sure of a fix, and i made sure to get the cd version.
Ah...something I'd haven't tried or thought of (maybe a firmware update for my NEC DVD-RW might help too) Tx much alucard_x, I called EB and they're holding a CD version for me.
Intel will have to wait ......

You know I couldn't get FEAR to run on my PC till I set it to Windows2000 compatibility mode. This is because of the Copy protection. So it might also apply to Quake 4.

Right click on the game icon (on desktop or start menu) select properties. Go to the compatibility tab then check the run this program in compatibility mode and choose Windows 2000 mode from the drop down box.

Another vote for trying stock settings if you haven't already.

I'm impressed with the game - when it doesn't crash. I've got the retail collector's edition. Purchased. From a store. With real money.

I'm getting horrific hard crashes. One crash in particular reset parts of my bios; on-board audio was enabled (I have an X-Fi), HDD boot priority had changed, secondary LAN was enabled, and some other minor settings had changed also.

My setup:

AMD 64 3800+ (stock)
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
Asus 7800GTX (stock, driver revision 78.03)
2GB Corsair DDR400 (2x1GB)
X-Fi Platinum

FEAR has been doing the same thing, which makes me think it's an audio or video driver issue. I guess I'll start with video and try the 78.05 revision.

I have the DVD edition and it is working fine here. I'm using the X-Fi drivers that came with my card. With Q4, it works fine with the system and cards overclocked but I have to run everything at stock for FEAR or it will lock on exit.

I'm using the 81.85s by the way. Scunner, I'd give the 81.85 betas a shot if you're going to play FEAR. They fix a few issues with it.

Many thanks to alucard_x for the last minute save....
Its running 100% no issue, it seems, with the Q4 CD copy protction and my DVD-RW.
Atleast I got a working X-Fi out of the deal.....If Q4 would have run in the first place I never would have run out an bought another X-Fi.

gotta go make up some play time///

Been playing Q4 for a couple of hours now with the 81.85s. Not crashes, no hitches. Thanks for the suggestion. Haven't tried FEAR yet.

I'm also using the 81.85s, both FEAR and Q4 run fine.

glad u got it workin..

it seems the ye olde amd 2500-m isn't goin to cut it anymore for these games. FEAR mp demo runs pretty good at 800x (i'd rather have high fps for MP than pretty graphics).. but man, q4 just eats my system alive. i'm down to low quality at 800x and i'm still getting 40fps in heavy fire fights.. can't really rail like that :/
