Default Performance woes solved with F.E.A.R and Quake 4 and EAX HD!

I posted an article on Guru3d's forum, and wanted to spread the good news for Audigy users and the latest games as this really helped some people and their performance including myself.

Here is a copy of my post.

I just wanted to let people know my experiences with some performance issues with F.E.A.R and Quake 4 over the last 24 hours.

To give some insight, here is a quick list of PC specs.

P4 3.4
Asus P5AD2-E
Asus 7800GT 256MB PCIE (81.85)
Creative Audigy 2
2x74GB Raptor Sata Drives Raid0
2GB DDR2 Dual Channel

Both Games - High Quality, 1024x768 etc..

First I tried F.E.A.R, had some major issues like stuttering, and lockups. I read a few threads and found that disabling EAX HD kept the game running for a few hours no problem.. But performance was still a little disapointing.

Then I tried Quake 4, and I tried to enable the OpenAL setting for sound in the game and it crashed.. It even warned me about problems without the latest sound card drivers. So I was like "whocares", just let me play. But damn, seems I am losing some frames so I made sure I went to creative labs and ran the Autoupdate but nothing new was there.. Then by chance I checked the manual downloads and found a Beta Audigy/2/ZS/4 driver update dated Sept 21/05.

Details from creativelabs.com

This beta driver is recommended for gamers who want full OpenAL™ support for their audio devices. Only the following audio devices are supported:

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy® series, Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum series, Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX series
Creative Sound Blaster® Audigy 2 series including Sound Blaster Platinum, Sound Blaster Platinum eX and Sound Blaster Value
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS series including Sound Blaster Platinum and Sound Blaster Platinum Pro
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 series
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook series
Added Features or Enhancements:

Provides full OpenAL / EAX® ADVANCED HD support
Improves performance of all OpenAL game titles

To make a long story short (for me) this driver eliminated 90% of the stuttering in both games, and the sound quality went through the roof... I am in gaming heaven.

Comments anyone?

I wonder if this helps anyone else with an Audigy Card and performance issues?

Thanks for your time.

Also just found this post, seems to be an OpenAL update of some sort, details are limited.

Thanks Superfly.

I will try this after work, and will post my results.

No doubt there, with an actual Home 5.1 Channel amp and Paradigm home speakers it has to be some of the best sound I have ever heard in a game.

F.E.A.R also sounds wicked on EAX HD with these beta drivers.

Now I'd consider that an immense loss, but I've never had a single issue with my A2.

Cant wait for an X-Fi

When you get an X-Fi make sure you get the "Creative Audio Console web release for Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi only 2.00.31"

Does anyone here have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS and has all 3 sound settings (HW mixing, EAX2, and EAXHD) enabled and is acutally able to hear the radio messages in FEAR (the ones with green ID tag in the upper left corner, during the radio message)?

I tried these new drivers (2.08.0002) but this problem remains just as it did with the old drivers (2.05.0000).

I can hear them, but faintly. I can barely make out the words.

Sorry I do not have that problem at all.

If I understand the audigy4's specs it's almost identical to the zs, just some very minor tweaks, I do run the game with all those enabled and have no performance problems, and I can hear all the messages.
