Default F.E.A.R. won't defragment

My usual policy on installing a new game is to run XP's disk defragmenter utility. However, having run it multiple times, Fear.Arch00, a 3+GB file, remains fragmented and won't defragment. Any idea why?

I had the same problem, the file had nearly 800 fragments and just wouldn't defrag, while everything else on my drive was perfectly defragged. I tried deleting more HD space, but still no dice. What ended up working was reinstalling. After I did that, the file only had 500 or so fragments, and ended up defragging just fine. Hope that helps ya.

Dunno how picky Windows Defragmenter is..
I think when it comes to that big files, it doesnt really "need" to be totally unfragmented, not that it hurts, but when you got 3gb its not a piece of cake to keep it all in one long segment I spose, specially if its changed (patching or whatever), which I think is why the bigger GCF files in SteamApps keeps getting fragmented, they are often changed...
And having a large file like that divded into a few fragments shouldnt notice performancewise, but 800 sound a bit much hehe..

238 fragments here... maybe a reinstall is in order - only just installed it, and patched it up to 1.0.1, haven't played it at all... Everything else, including HL2, is perfectly defragmented. V odd.

I ran PerfectDisk recently (two days after installing FEAR) and it worked like a charm.

been using PerfectDisk for years, up until a few weeks ago when it hung, and after reboot had destroyed the entire partition I was defragmenting..
Not risking using it again, shame cause I really liked it..

It had hung before, always on a certain partition, but never had any sideeffects before..
So a word of causion.. I did manage to salvage some of the important stuff I had using some freeware tool called PC Inspector File Recovery.

Hmmm that strange, Windows build in disk defragment wasnt wrote by Microsoft, it was wrote by former Executive Software Inc now changed their name to Diskeeper Corporation. I am now defragmenting my hard drive with Diskeeper 9 and will report back to see if it can defrag Fear.Arch00 3GB file.

I guess the build in Windows defragment tool cant defrag 3GB or large file.

Now the Diskeeper defragment is completed without problems. You will need the latest version of Windows defragment tool to do it.

Downloaded the trial version of Diskeeper 9, ran it - and Fear.Arch00 has now defragmented, indeed 100% defragmentation/0 fragments across the whole drive. I wonder if this difficulty in defragmenting Arch00 using the basic defragmenter is one of the reasons people have been complaining about stuttering and hitching... on my system, those 280+ fragments were very widely scattered.
