Strafeing is more of a flick of the mouse each time you land from a jump. The faster/better you get at coordinating this movement the more speed you will get. I have been strafeing in Q3 for years so it comes very natural to me, buit I can see how its confusing for someone new to the series.

To strafejump, one must execute a series of jumps in succession while doing something with the mouse and strafe keys to get acceleration or keep speed. One has to press the jump key immediately after landing for straightforward movement, or some short time later for better turning control.
The something with the mouse and strafe keys is this:
one must be holding one of strafe keys, and the mouse should be turned slightly in the same direction during pressing of the jump key.

Here's a video in which I first did a series of strafejumps in the same direction (only right strafe was used), and then I did an alternating series in both directions to keep going straight. Notice subtle turning of the mouse to the right as I land and press jump again. It can be seen much better in the second half with alternating jumps.

To strafe jump you have to "throw" youself in the direction you are going using repeating flick movements. I'll try to make a video of straje jumping in Q3 for ya.

yea, MrSavoy hit strafe jumping right on the head. strafe jumping is more than just hitting strafe and jumping at the same time. you have to fling the mouse in the direction you are jumping, while at the same time hitting the forward and strafe keys. there are some extremely detailed vids and such if you google strafe jumping tutorial

Ok I just threw this together, shows some speed you can achieve and distance while strafe jumping:

Nice video. Amazing for you to record, edit, and put it up so quickly.
However, perhaps from choppiness of 25fps recording in Fraps, your strafejumps aren't that well executed . The turning of the mouse timing seems slightly off.

Bear in mind I havent played Quake 3 regularly in over a year now, I've been noobified by CS:S I really didn't have time to retake them either, and its hard when FRAPS limits it to 30fps..

Downloading your vid now, at 30k/s, argh.

There's no strafejumping in any other games aside from quake2, quake3, doom3, and quake4. There's a somewhat crippled strafejumping in SOF2 (based on q3 engine) that only works when every next landing point is higher than the previous one.

There's double jumping in UT2K4 though. Which is basically multiple repetitions of a turning side dodge / jump combination. It can get you going pretty fast if done correctly, but isn't nearly as elegant as strafejumping in quake.

Quake 2 double jumping was the best, man the speed at which you could run Q2DM1..

Nice vid arch, nice and controlled. I'm going to play around on Q4 this evening and try to spot some trick jumps which involve strafes. I'll make a new vid then.
