Default Re: Call of Duty 2 DX9 performance fixes

I have noticed something very strange. I set the game to run on optimal settings, then switched to 1024x768, turned on SLI enhancements, turned all texture options to normal, soft smoke to off, AA to off, and texture filtering to anistropic. I then got the game running much better at around a minimum of 35 FPS then after a few minutes the game suddenly drops performance by about 25% making the game very sluggish. Performing a vid restart made the game fast again. Anyone else had this happen? Possible sollutions?

Yeah, I've had that happen. I originally noticed the weird slowdown effect while I was spending hours tweaking this and that to get the game to run better.

First of all i think that the in game command cg_drawfps 1 is a bit bugged, so don't care too much the fps you see on the screen. Sometimes it moves from 10 to 50 even if you are rendering the same number of scenes per second.

A part this, i tried to exec all those commands in game, but nothing changed.... but.... when i suddenly, just to be curious, i typed r_zfeather 0 (which was, as someone said, an optional setting) i had 50 fps everywhere, but it was not a bug, i could feel the smooth playing in my hands moving in the game.

That could sound a bit strange, but all the other command didn't change anything to me, but the zfeather made me jump from 33 to 50fps (and COD2 has 50fps cap i think).

I'm trying now to make different settings to see if the r_zfeather command really makes the difference.

And as far as i've seen, the picmip stuff does not help, not even for 1fps.
well i have switched to FRAPS since you claim the ingame FPS counter is buggy and i still got big FPS boost when picmip tweak was enabled.

For the r_zfeather feature, you dont have to bine it in the cfg. There is a ZFeather smoke option in the ingame option menu,so turn it off if you like.but I'd rather keep it on EVERTHING than off since i enjoy the soft smoke effect much. And to be point out COD2 is the only game present the soften smoke effect so far

It's not setting low quality then high quality hoping for an fps boost. Maybe i didn't make it clear. The command r_applypicmip itself is what gives the fps boost (not the picmip value it applies). But r_applypicmip won't run unless an r_picmip value has changed. So if you usually run at highest quality, you need to set a lower quality, so that r_applypicmip can be run. You need to run it a second time to get back to quality setting you actually want running. This may be an NV40-only bug, but it does exist, other people in the thread have said it works for them too.

The picmip tweak does indeed work on my 68GT. In my haste, I previously stuck the tweak.cfg in the wrong place. I can afford to turn on zFeather now...props to myshkinbob.

Why is the FPS capped at 91 in multiplayer?

I gained 5-6 fps just by enabling SLI with my 6800u in DX9. Have not tried the other fixes yet. Thanks for he find myshkinbob.

I wonder if the issues will be fixed in a new version.

Bah I wish you could just disable smoke all together, cause everytime I run through it, it lags like a bitch!

yes, the picmip works but, if i don't finalize the whole process with the r_zfeather 0 command, i won't see any fps boost, i dunno if it's only to me, i'll try some later.

My specs are: (already said before)

7800GTX @ 500 / 1400
2gb Corsair XMS 3200CL @ 236mhz cas2,5-3-3-6
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2830mhz (more than Fx-57, but with 512kb cache)

If thats a problem to you theres a command to set the maxfps though i'm not sure if it work on MP. its r_maxfps or something close.
